Battery under drivers seat
Hi Guys,

Has anyone fitted an auxiliary battery under the drivers seat? There seems to be plenty of room in there for a low profile battery.

I have ann ARB Fridge, a cetek 250s charger and a 100Ah leisure battery in a battery box. My original intention was to mount the battery box in the back, next to the fridge but I feel that a more permanent mounting would be better.
I don't want to mount it next to the starter battery as the box is crammed with extra fuse boxes and relays as well as the jack!

So it appears simple enough, IF I can find a suitable low profile battery. All the batteries I have been able to find so far are 175H x 175D x 278L for a 75Ah. Can anyone point me in the direction of a lower one. I could probably squeeze in this one or a 243mm long 60Ah capacity one after removing, then replacing the fuse box and fog light relay and fuse block but the headroom is a bit tight.

So any advice / information appreciated.

ive just fitted a large motorcycle battery in drivers side ( which is still small compared to car battey ) , the battery is only to run radio to stop dropping out during starting

on mine there was very limited amount of room without moving stuff around

the battery I fitted would be no good for fridge etc its only 22ah , but as its only function is to power radio during cranking its fine for that

If you use a sealed/gel battery like the Odyssey batteries you can use them laid on their side if that helps. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Thanks for the suggestions, the AGM battery on it's side would have the same problem as they tend to be wider than 175mm so wouldn't fit when placed on their side. I shall keep looking but it's looking like a battery box in the rear. Big Cry BTW anybody know why elongated nuts have been used to secure the seat box - they will have to go if I do get a battery in there.

Hi ,

Well, did it! I managed to get a 50Ah AGM battery that fits beneath the edge of the drivers seat box, it's actually a battery designed for a mobility scooter, so who knows may have a second use for it in a few years Very Happy !

It's a bit smaller in capacity than I would have liked but it should power the fridge for a good 48 hours and it's likely in that time that I would run the engine or use a solar panel.

As well as the battery I have fitted a Ctek D250S dc/dc charger which also accepts an input from a solar panel, it first charges the service battery then switches to the starter battery. I have temporarily rigged an 80W panel sitting on the roof and it all seems to work. I have fitted a 6 way fuse box and a negative bus bar so connecting other items such as my HF transceiver will be simple.

Here are a couple of photos showing the instal. The device on the top, outside of the beatbox is a power/watt meter which tells me how much energy the solar panel is delivering.
