Intermittent Limp mode - 2.4 TdCi
Every 250 miles or so my 2007 90 2.4 pops the engine light on and the truck loses power going in to limp mode. This always happens when pressing the accelerator down hard for more power and only in 6th gear. After coasting to a halt and switching off the ignition it will restart and rev normally but the engine light remains on and further heavy use of the accelerator triggers limp mode.

Once home I can clear the fault code P1216 and normal performance is restored for approx 250 miles.

The DTC code indicates Pedal position sensor circuit high.

Has anyone else experienced this fault? Any ideas on how to fix at home appreciated.

have you replaced the fuel filter recently? I had weird limp mode and sporadic fault codes when mine needed changing as short on fuel every so often when it got a bit blocked, particularly high gears up hills when flat out Cheers, David

My first suspicion for a malfunction caused by pressing hard on the accelerator, supported by the P1216 code, would be a faulty throttle position sensor. I suggest replacing the throttle pedal assembly.

my 07 2.4 has just done the exact same thing.

about month go it had exact same symptoms give it some revs went into limp mode, with me always happened on round abouts or slip roads in traffic where you need to look lively.

should also mention the fuel economy had dropped right of

it went to main dealer where they diagnosed faulty injectors and one transit injector so they replaced all the injectors £££££££££££££££ and ££££££££££££££

fuel economy back to normal went like total rocket ship very happy Smile

now done about 500/800 miles


but today the old problem of giving it some revs up to 3k kils it puts it into limp mode, turn the ignition of engine is back but with light on few key cycles later the light goes out.

I will mention throttle pedal see what the garage say

but there is now another electrical issue that may or may not be connected

left it un locked in the yard wernt back to it and everything I mean everything was dead. nothing no ignition lights no radio no interior lights clock had stopped nothing stone cold dead.


checked the battery all ok putting out 12.4volts

I removed the earthclamp no spark or the usual little crack as you remove the clamp

tapped the clamp on the earth terminal of the battery few times then as if by magic it all came to life again, tightened up the clamp turned the key all normal again

wether the engine fault and being dead fault are connected im still to find out

Dave, I've had that before.
Loosen the earth clamp a bit, give the battery post a few bangs to slightly flatten it. (I mean slightly)

Then tighten the clamp up and that should give a good tight fit with less resistance.

All your problems are down to this and whilst driving most likely.

Thanks David. The fuel filter is less than 1 year old and about 4000 miles. Good point though and might be worth changing before shelling out on a replacement throttle pedal assembly.

Hi Davefarmer. Thanks for sharing your experiences. You've had some expense there. Part of my reluctance in ripping out and changing my throttle assembly is that with the Defender (and any vehicle I guess but my Defender does seem to suffer more than other cars I've owned) there can be multiple issues as you have described.

As a precaution I'm going to check my battery earth.

By the way if you don't mind sharing the information, how much did it cost to have your injectors replaced?

Any resolution?

Been having the same issue with going into limp mode but only when going up a specific stretch of inclined highway at 100km or so in 4th or 5th.

Otherwise runs perfectly. Just fix it before your friends find out it broke again - Landy Life Forever!

My fault was fuel injector blow by. Resolved by removing and re-seating the injectors.

Had that happen too.

Would recommend anyone with a PUMA to switch the intercooler inlet hose with a silicon one as soon as possible.

On that occassion, the hose split and caused the van to go into limp while driving along on a highway. No special demand or incline. Was able to trundle along at about 30 Km/h to get to my desination and back.

However the problem that i'm refering to here is where under climbing conditions on a motorway doing about 100 Km/h in 5th or 6th, the van slowly loses power and become unresponsive to the any input from the accelerator.

Also noticed in this instance that the temperature needle momentarily spiked to the HOT position and then immediately came back down to COOL after going limp.

The van did not require turning key on then off or any kind of restart.

Merely picked back up seconds later as soon as the needle came down.

Continued the trip perefectly fine after that.

The whole thing lasted about 15 seconds.

Been happeneing for years... always on one particular stretch of highway...always in the same pattern.

Tempted to chalk up to my bad handling; over demanding in high gear while on an incline?

Even though the incline in this instance was quite moderate, but long. Just fix it before your friends find out it broke again - Landy Life Forever!
