Apologies Mad One,
Can't offer opinion for your enquiry as I'm still learning about this overland stuff myself. My wife and I are planning a trip to Oz via kazakhstan and Mongolia so would be interested in following your progress. Any web site? when you going? Steve |

Hi
Our intention is to Ship our vehicles out to Magadan in Late May with the intention of flying out and picking them up in August. Then it is the Road of Bones first before heading south and picking up the BAM road. Once we get to the top of Lake Baikal we will head south down the east side of the lake on our way to Mongolia. Once into Mongolia we will head west along the northern part of Mongolia. Back into the Altai regin of Russia and head west to Latvia for a crew change. Then it is Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany Holland and the ferry to the UK. ONce back in the UK we will head for Ardnamurchan on the west coast of Scotland for a BBQ. ( most westerly point on the UK. Our aim is to go from the Pacific east to the Atlantic west. We will be photographing and filming the whole thing and there will eb a blog to follow. My friend drove through Kahzakstan last year so I will get hime to drop you a line. Stuart |

Make sure you change all your axle internals for either Ashcroft or Kam as you won't want the original monkey metal letting you down out there

Hi,
So just how much of the internals should I change. I have been advised to fit heavy duty end caps on the outboard end, was going down the rear ARB locker route. I guess you are suggesting all the drive shafts get changed also?? |

Yes change all the internals It will cost a bit but the last thing you want is a diff or CV breaking in the middle of nowhere. Also fit an ARB in the front

Hi , sounds like a great trip!!!, there a few people here in NZ who are thinking of shipping to Vlad and driving one way via "new" all weather federal highway to Magadan and coming back on the "old" road (that Ewan Mcgregor took on his trip) but they have td5s and mentioned they are getting spare ECU (which are of course readily available and cheaper than new ford ones I guess) I would love to go also
I have a Russian family and my wife's relative drives Kamaz trucks across Russia, the best advice I could give you based on his experience is 1. Buy a Racor Fuel filter funnel and use it every time you fill up. 2. if possible maybe engineer a second in line Racor diesel fuel filter(or similar) in the fuel line from the tank to your engine as the standard one may not be up to the job as. Russia diesel in those isolated areas may be subjected to "dilution" with other material, there may be higher levels of paraffins and other additives (winter fuel types) which may or may not be good for very new style injectors in the Puma which do not take kindly to any type of stuff getting into the common rail or actual injectors. Kamaz trucks and other russian vechiles are engineered to take this. you would only have this risk in the more isolated areas and not on the main roads where the fuel would be "turned over " more at the service stations and not be subjected to sitting in tanks for long periods etc etc Just for interest have you found shipping directly to Magadan or a company on Vlad? here is a link to the Magadan 4WD club(sorry Russian only), I am sure they would be interested in your trip!!! if they are like any other Russians you will suffer"Vodka hostage taking" I.e they will kill you with kindness and food and drink http://www.nord-trophy.ru/forum/index.php here is a link to a guy who did the new road on motorbikes http://www.sibirskyextreme.com/blog/category/magadan/ and other link in english : http://www.yakutiatoday.com/travel/reviews_krasnkmagadan.shtml be aware you can usually only get 90 days in a row out of 180 days time in Russia now on a Visa |
