Farming grants and enterprise for new and young farmers

Being a defender forum there's surely a wealth of farming knowledge. Are there any experts, charities etc that can point a complete novice in the right direction and talk through options and possibilities for a new venture. The EU class a young farmer as under 40 and the options are better as a young farmer.

Briefly we are looking to relocate to France and purchase a nice amount of land 30-100 hectares and then plan is to create a gite/holiday business but also set up a small scale farming environment. Will be woodland, hay making and a relatively small number of animals. The farming side won't be designed to get the best gains but to create a nice environment to live and benefit from.

Any pointers to who options can be discussed would be great fully received. As would any of you that have made the change.

Good start would be to contact your local Rural Payments Agency office and ask for an appointment with the Farm Liasson Officer. Take it from there. Other avenues might be joining the National Farmers Union and going along to some of the monthly county meetings in your area and talking to other farmers or join the British Farming Forum and ask on there.

Wouldn't talking-to the French be the way. I can understand where your coming from. However being an Australian its easy to speak to my local farming bodies, but if I were to set up in New Zealand well that's a different country, community, mine set, rules and so on. But not really sure how emcompasing EU is over your way.

Twentyfive plus years ago the magazine Farmers Weekly were following a couple that set up a farm in Northern France and they logged a lot advice for those wanting to set up on the other side of the Channel. Also bear in mind that the rules and regs vary remarkably large amounts between the countries. Even more odd given it's all under the same EU policy.

From what I've read of the new BPS stuff I could have sworn that young farmers were defined as under 35?
