Tell your mate to use the graduated filter and the adjustment brush in Camera Raw or if he does not shoot in Raw then open a seperate layer and use the exposure slider and the burn brush in Photoshop to bring back details in the blown highlights in the sky, before he converts to HDR. Great photoshop work though.
