the hitch pushes in the same as when you brake but in the drum , as the shoes grip to brake but as drum turns backwards as you reverse , some go down a ramp inside , others on a kind of cam action
there are a few different kinds , but as far as I know there all in the drums |

Just a word of caution.
If you reverse a trailer/caravan with auto reverse brakes make sure you pull the draw bar forward with the tow vehicle , this will put the brake shoes back to the correct position and allow the hand brake to be applied. I have seen first hand what happens to caravans/trailer that have been reversed into a spot, caravan/trailer hand brake applied, vehicle unhitched and driven away only for caravan/trailer to move off on its own. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |
