Merlin, that is what I read about copper grease too. So you say LM (Lithium) grease, I presume that the ceramic grease which I ordered and which is fully metal and silicon free will be as good as LM grease, no? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Merlin - I want to learn on this, so don't take it the wrong way...but why do you say it corrodes? On a plain alloy wheel I've had for 14 years, it's been treated with copperslip several times a year and it has absolutely no corrosion. |

I think he means disslimier metal corrosion between copper based grease , alloy , steel etc
guessing you know this , but most different metals will react with each other even more so with saltwater , road salt , some cleaners etc setting up a sort of electrolysis that will eat one of the metals away more then the other normally BUT after saying all this ive used coppa-slip for years on steels and alloys and never found it a problem , always used on all customers cars personally I would use something that serves two purposes , slippery and anti corrosion like corrosion block grease or even waxoyl ( had waxoyl on the hubs and inside wheel centres on mine for years and are as new still and only put on once when defender new ) you can get alu-slip as well , as name says a anti-seize grease with aluminium instead of copper ( I got a tin of it but never used it on anything yet! ) |

Was at our local VW dealer with the Mrs. car for replacing here winter alloys by the summer alloys. They are spraying a blue colored grease onto the hubs before putting the wheels on.... --> Ceramic grease.
I questioned them about copper grease, and they said that they replaced that long time ago by ceramic grease. Various reasons, including the argument that ceramic grease has zero metal content, so neutral to both alloys and hubs. But they also said that there have been cases where quite a bit of copper slip was put on in the past, which hardens up, and which in certain cases was cause of a imbalance due to old copper grease layers sticking between hub and wheel. Sofar only have been reading and hearing of various positives of using ceramic grease for this purpose, and nothing negative, so I am making the switch now. Eric You never actually own a Defender. Appears your mind may have been made up on post 1 anyway. ANY grease is better than none obviously.
Never heard of that one. A lot of the copper anti-sieze compound greases for example Coppercrest contain pure copper, graphite and corrosion inhibitors.....can't see and have never seen any examples of corrosion being caused by it, even in the harshest of conditions where our vessels are actually made of aluminium. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! Last edited by K9F on 30th Mar 2015 7:37pm. You can get nickel-slip too, which we use on spark plugs for our gas engine. I can't think why, but it's nicknamed nicker-slip. |
