Please can anyone "in the know" suggest a college for my son to train in joinery/cabinet-making in the UK?
He is 18 and has just finished an internship at a joiners here in Germany. There seem to be hundreds of colleges offering BTEC level qualifications but we are clueless about how to choose. Any advice would be much appreciated. Cheers Matt Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Cheers
That's a useful site! Unfortunately I should have added that he doesn't have any UCAS points (he grew up in the German system and isn't academic...). He can't attend university Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Came across this
http://www.woodworking.co.uk/Courses/courses.html But I was actually going to point you in the direction of the Thirsk area. There are several high end furniture/cabinet makers round there and it strikes me that if there are top end companies, there might be good training facilities as they would need to keep a supply of labour. I think there are so many round there because that was where Robert Thompson - the mouseman was from. Added bonus for that part of the world is - it's a lovely part of the world but with easy access to both Leeds and Newcastle airports with links to KLM and flying home. Barbara |

Well, he's been interviewed and offered places at the Building Crafts College in Stratford and at Easton&Otley College in Suffolk. The London one sounds awesome and teaches carpentry and masonry, a lot of it aimed at heritage restoration. I would have to sell both kidneys if he lives near there but it's my preference at the moment. We are waiting to hear from a few others Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

If he does end up at Easton then it's fairly easy to get flight to Norwich airport.
It's a lovely little place, you can park right by the main doors to the place the only problem is they charge you a £10 tax for leaving |
