That would depend on a number of things, in most cases nothing at all.
If the swivel bearing is worn and there isn't enough pre-load then you may get steering wobble. This can be very severe depending on the state of the road, the balance of the tyres/wheels, the condition of the steering damper, the condition of the track rod ends, the condition of the steering box and pan hard rod bushes. Essentially it just adds another potential for movement in the steering and once the total amount of play in the steering adds up to a certain amount a slight bump in the road or a certain speed can start off an oscillation that can become so severe, in extreme cases, that the only way to stop it is to bring the vehicle to a near complete halt. The pre-load acts as a damper for those oscillations but each of the items listed above can also play a similar role which is why identifying the cause of steering shimmy/vibration can be really tricky ! http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

The steering death wobble was fairly common in the pre-Railko bush days of old, when wear in the splines on the top pin caused a loss of damping (oldies will know what I am on about).
If you haven't experienced it before, it is a great stimulant for tbe very rapid production of adrenaljne ! |

I think i actually do more swivel rebuilds on the twin bearing type than the old style and definitely more wheel bearings on td5's than anything else.
Culprits for wobbles are the swivel preload, steering damper, panhard rod bushes and bolts, steering shaft UJs, prop UJS, front radius arms, drop arm, wonky wheels, TRE's to name a few so it can be very hard to trace sometimes. |
