I think your attention to detail is making my rebuild look a bit half-assed.
How about keeping it the original colours? |

The engine i am hopeing to get has been stored under cover but think in a damp atmospher and all the ally stuff has slightly oxidised so thinking if i paint these parts i mite aswell paint the rest of the engine aswell but not all one colour

Have it chemically cleaned then it would look like a brand new engine. Thier is also a shot blaster who uses crushed cherry stones not that far from you. it is located on the small industrail estate near where B&Q stockport is. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

be honest your always going to have problems getting paint to stay on a engine
get engine as clean as poss ,, good steam clean will do then wash off with thinners ( I wouldn't fancy having it blasted with any kind of grit etc due to it getting inside ) most important thing when painting is a very very thin coat first ( even so thin you can hardly see any colour to it ), the thin coat will soak in to any rust or rough casing areas next coat bit thicker , then next coat thicker if you paint first coat thick it will not last and will look terrible within 6 months even after 2-3 coats you still don't want a thick coating , just light flick over coats and paint while other coats are tacky painted quite a few race engines and its the only way to get it to look good and last as long as poss |

We have a BUPI cleaner in our workshops (like a gigantic dishwasher for engines) if you can get the block to me I'll happily shove it in there for a few hours !. We paint the engines with a paint that is very similar to stove enamel.

Put it all together in one piece and spray it all massey ferguson grey machine enamel. Job done. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Who are you getting the block done by?
I would stick to original gold/brown-orange paint, sound boring but mine still has original paint on it after 24 years so can't be that bad! One route to look at for the ancillary is having them wet blasted. We have a company near us who weirdly make exhausts but they can do wet blasting and the results are amazing. Much easier than all that boring polishing and less damaging. Brings aluminum up like brand new! My ROW defender had a replacement 300tdi engine re manufactured by Land Rover themselves in 2006. It came from the crate resprayed in thick silver paint all over, rocker cover and all. It all flaked off the head and rocker cover within weeks due to no primer used!

Black in my opinion. Of all the things in the engine bay, the block is not the thing you probably want to accentuate. I think colour works best when used sparingly and in coordination, i.e. silicone hoses, etc.
