I agree with MK.
Use it only at low speeds when you expect a traction problem, if you expect lifting a wheel or if the going gets tough. When locking at high speeds there is a potential stability issue and otherwise no additional bennefit.

The manual is also clear. "The differential should be locked when driving off-road on loose and slippery surfaces". Driving 70 on a gravel or dirt road is still on-road so don't lock the CD.
However I can remember situation in the rainy season that the diff lock was needed on-road to keep going.

I don't think that locking reduces wear. Just the oposite in my opion. A locked differential has a slight play that can hammer all the time to increase the play. But has anybody ever heard about a worn out CD?

Maybe another interesting question. How is it to drive at high speed with a Detroit locker in the rear axle?
That is a diff that is not realy a diff and could behave funny what I understand. Any negative experiences at high speed? Joost

I have a Detroit locker in the rear of my 90. Previous I had that locker in my Camel discovery. You don't feel if it is there at speed. Going on and off the throttle in an long bend you feel it going to the outside when you are on the throttle.

I haven't driven Land Rovers in desert conditions, I have driven severall japs in Oman, Qatar, Azerbaijan, Nigeria and Algeria. I used 4wd most off the time as it was much more stable then just rear wheel drive.
My experience with my Camel in Kroatia is that on a dirt road it doesn't make much difference but if you have a washboard piste CDL locked makes it more stable.

Most washboard pistes you have to drive below 50km/hr or above 70 km/hr to get a sort off comfortable ride. Roel
