Going to play devils advocate here.
Without going and opening my airbox I am assuming that the blank section is in-line with the air inlet hole? If the incoming air has a straight run then I am guessing that in future you will see a distinct dirty area in-line with this hole where the air is being drawn into the airbox and straight through the filter material meaning this section gets clogged quicker. By fitting a blank over the filter material in this area (as per OE) the air is forced to be drawn through a much larger area of the filter material thus spreading the dirt over a larger area. Just a rambling thought??? ![]() Some standard spec aftermarket air-filters are perforated all over anyway, in fact I have just replaced mine and the one I took out was just like this and had steel mesh over the whole filter body however the BP one I replaced it with has the blank section as per OE. Can't recall the manufacturer of the previous one but I suspect it is going to be BM or BP as I tend to buy their service parts year in year out. Didn't look too hard at the filter, it wasn't dirty (I do quite a low mileage and don't drive across the Sahara much) but as it had been in 12-months I replaced it anyway. For a while I ran an ITG performance air-filter on my 300TDi (along with larger intercooler, tweeks etc) but after cleaning it just once I decided that I just couldn't be bothered and have resorted to standard filters again. I am not saying that it didn't make a difference, just that I couldn't notice it. In fact I listed the ITG filter only last week and it was snapped up quite quickly. ![]() |

Mmmmm.Thats food for thought Litch.I never thought of it like that.
I have been running mine like this for the last couple of years and the old filterts have never had a more clogged area where the inlet is.& its prety dusty here in summer.I do run through a snorkle though. Marc. |
