Depends on the person. Tirfor's are good little winches but as you know are man powered. Slow to set up and even slower to use. But have a great pulling capability.

Yes, I still use Tirfors.... and Trewhellas .... and vehicle mounted winches - whatever is most sutable for the job in hand.
A T508 or TU8 Tirfor (800Kg lift) has a similar capacity to most vehicle mounted winches (at leasst Defender-sized-vehicle-mounted winches) and is small, light, cheap (if bought second hand) and will work at any angle, and even underwater. It will pull forwards, backwards, sideways, upwards, downwards, and, since its cable is a similar size to vehicle-mounted winch cable, you can use the cheap 4x4-style snatch blocks to pull round corners. If I had to choose between only a Tirfor or only a vehicle mounted winch, absolutley no contest, the Tirfor is the most versatile tool, and is more likely to be capable fo saving you life when the chips are down. Slow and fairly cumbersome and not that easy to store inside a Defender.
They do have their place but it's not anywhere near me  110 D250 SE HT

Like I say, didn't mean to high jack, but none the less, very interesting seeing both sides of the argument.
Doesn't help my inability to make decisions however, but interesting none the less    . |

No worries ref the hijack.
All discussion about various bits of kit be that winches, roofracks, roftents has to be good for others. Love my Tirfor - the absolutely best piece of offroad kit I have ever bought.
Given that I'm never competing in a winch challenge then slow is actually good - loads come on gradually and you can feel if a vehicle is coming unstuck or is actually hung up on something not immediately visible. Never seen anyone else with one but I have a coilamatic unit with mine and makes handling the wire rope a doddle. |

I use wheelbarrow tyres for the ropes for the 800kg Tirfors and the the 1600kg Tirfors, and a lightly larger (poss motor scooter - I can't remember) tyre for the 3200kg units.
It is rare now that I use either of the larger sizes, since almost anything is possible with an 800Kg Tirfor. Great tool! |

Better to broaden the theme to include other fine hand winches, such as the Trewhella Monkey and Wallaby winches - the kings of hand winching.
Ten ton plus single line pull on the Monkey, 6 tons single on the Wallaby, but a bit too heavy for everyday use! |
