That would be great but would cost me money. I doubt land rover would put a td5 in as warranty replacement

Interesting one.
Debating the same thing myself, though without an offer on the table. Personally I would be looking for a newer Disco3. The large 4x4 market isn't exactly flush with punters at the moment and some 2nd hand prices are unrealistically high. I love my Defender but like you losing heart with its issues. Take a look at the sister site to this one www.disco3.co.uk/forum/ if you haven't already. Cheers Ken Stornoway Grey 90 XS Focus C-Max Tdci Kawasaki ZX6R C6f |

ibex man sold his county double cab for £13500no vat it was a 07 model with under 4k so defenders are not making good money at present disco 3s are very cheap as well
i have had loads of problems with my 07 but would not change at present due to company cax tax a 08 defender will be no diffrent than a 07 i am sticking with it at present the new clutch only came out last month so it would have to be a very late build and the engine problem was all so only sorted last month so a early 08 will be the same car dan |

Me - i think the transit engine is better than the defender and i would stick with it.
Defender prices arent over all that bad and ignoring the horrid looks of the d3 they will always loose more money Mike |

its been ok so far the new Clutch and gearbox are working very well not as tight as when i picked it up but still no funny noises i think its about three weeks now. my engine seems to be ok no knocking noise yet i did miss the chance to swop my one by having it repaired first off which was a shame as per your dealers offer disco 3 needs a 3 year warrenty just think of all the tect stuff to go wrong and the cost. i had a loan disco 3 on a 57 plate gs spec auto in black checked the dealers web page when i picked it up 27k 5 weeks later when i picked my defender back up it was down to 22,5 k not selling at present i would be very temped but it would have to be a lot newer very nice to drive went on hoilday to devon in the loan one kids filled it with sand from the beach what \Model defender do you have at present that they will swop if its a county spec will it have ac as you will miss all the bits the XS have double cabs look the best out of the lot a very late 2008 build date would have the uprated clutch and sorted engine i am sure they have to be past the august build date as my new clutch fitted last month is the uprated one dan |

Dan,
Good to hear you got sorted, my dealer also has been very helpful . I seam to be heading in the direction of the Double - cab, maybe sept build with ABS/ETC, don't really use aircon in the XS anyway. Your info. about the upgrade build since August has swayed the decision in favour of the defender. Thanks |

it depends what you want the vehicle for
D3 is very very capable and rarely has mechanical issues in my experience and is ideal for load carrying and towing, i would only have the auto though and HSE 07MY is easier and cheaper to fix and more compliant to DIY mechanics but rougher to drive and live with but much more character. I made the same decision about a month ago and now have a 110 on order. Running costs on a D3 are much higher - mpg, servicing and insurance are all worse. Well my 2007 Defender is just going from bad to worse. Its due for engine replacement on the 13th of october and while driving home today got a bad smell of diesel, crawled underneath to have a look and diesel all over the chassis on the passenger side , only seams to be leeking when its been driven as no drips on the driveway.
Also noticed gear box oil drips on all the nuts on the gearbox and transfer box, its probabley next to go !! This is my 4th defender and the worst ever by a mile , how land rover get away with producing such crap in this day and age is beyond me. Why should not have to put up with this poor build quality. This car cost me 50k euro here in Ireland and to say I am now off is an under statement. Rant over feel better now ! Nidge. |

Nidge,
Very bad experience Sometimes I feel like a lab mice or beta tester of LR . At least my motor still is in good shape but I fear that can fail in every moment (I hope not). Regarding your question: Necesarily the late 2008 Model should have less bugs than the 2007 one, giving you more reliability (If they learn from the errors). Sometimes is a luck issue. D3 with 30.000 km its a used one and probably you will not have full access to the car history and can give you more headaches. If I must to decide I will go for the Defender 2008 one, at least you have the guarantee and if fails again you can move to another model D3 or other.
