Low fuel - misfire
Today on my way to the fuel station my defender started to misfire every 3 or so seconds, it is the first tank of diesel I've put in it as I had been running around on what the dealer had put in.

I had only done 20 miles or so with the light on and when I filled up I got 71 litres in so I assume there would have been 4 litres left (75L tank by the book). Is that low enough for it to start running out?

Or was it the ecu telling me it needed fuel rather urgently?

Also the handbook says I have 2 gallons left when the light goes on and there was I assume 4L left so does that mean that realistically the light means 20 miles left? Shocked 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

When light comes on there is supposed to be 50 miles left in tank and before tank is empty engine will go into limp mode so try and stop driver from completely running out. Apparently it's a big deal if the engine runs dry. We are talking Puma! Smile

The misfire is the PCM telling you to fill up immediately. I believe there is a section on this in the drivers handbook ?

What concerned me most is that the light had only been on for approximately 20 miles of gentle driving, like I said it is the first time I've filled it so no doubt I'll get used to it but it seems like a pretty small warning especially as I'm not exactly close to a fuel station where I live 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Was going to this weekend but plans changed. Might be coming up during the week next week. I'll have to resist buying some goodies Laughing 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I ran mine low once to see how far it would go. As soon as it misfired I stopped and put fuel in with a can. I came to the conclusion that you should not expect more than 35 miles from the fuel light coming on.
I have a 90 XS, may be different on loner wheel bases with a different tank.
