I finally got around to fitting the D44 Transmission Guard today, took a lot longer than I thought as it's a right pain. I took loads of photos as I know there's been a few questions in the past about how to fit them and getting the studs in without taking the Handbrake off. I didn't take the Handbrake off, but it does mean some cutting action.
First I put the rear on Axle stands, not really for clearance but to try and help move the oil towards the front of the transmission so that when the 3 studs are removed the oil doesn't pour out......it still did! Click image to enlarge These are the 3 studs that need removing. Click image to enlarge I cleaned everything up with a wire brush and GT85 Click image to enlarge Put some newspaper on the floor to catch any oil when the studs are removed. Click image to enlarge I learnt from other people that the supplied replacement studs (they are stronger) will be too long to get into place without removing the handbrake, therefore, I wanted to remove one of the studs and then cut the new ones down to the same length, but of course, removing the stud means the oil will come out. So I got another small bolt, put some PTFE tape on it ready to plug the hole with it. Click image to enlarge I tried to remove a stud and as you can see from the mark on the handbrake back plate, it was too long to come out. Therefore, I cut some of the thread off. I ended up doing this to all 3 studs. Click image to enlarge Once removed, the oil started to come out so I plugged it with the bolt I got ready earlier whilst I cut the new studs down to size. Click image to enlarge 1 old stud with 3 new ones, as you can see they are much longer Click image to enlarge I trimmed all 3 down and made sure that the threads where cleaned up as you don't want to be struggling getting it in with oil coming out and you certainly don't want to cross-thread it. Click image to enlarge All 3 studs in place. Click image to enlarge The front bracket. Normally when assembling things like this you leave everything loose until it's fitted and tighten, however, it's pretty impossible to get to one of these bolts when the guard is on, so it has to be tightened fully at this stage. Click image to enlarge Offering up the guard and it was way out, it was a struggle to even get the bolt in, however, once in it was ok. You can make out in the photo that the guard is fouling the bracket bolt. Click image to enlarge Once all tightened, you can see that it fits much better. Remember, at this point, the guard is just sitting on the 3 studs at the other end and no nuts have been put on yet. Click image to enlarge Now to work getting the front nuts onto the studs. Click image to enlarge All nuts and bolts are tight and guard is done. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge All done! It seems good, would work well and looks decent but the fitting looks a devil.
I suppose it may be an idea to get main dealer to fit during servicing. At least then if it does leak they can top up and as it would be in anyway would cost a bit less. Having said that I expect you could expect to pay the same as it's worth just in labour charges. |

It is a bit of a pain, or perhaps just long winded is the right term.
You'd think something that just attaches with a total of 6 nuts/bolts would be a simple job. I lost hardly any oil, certainly not enough to require topping it up. As long as your quick with the stud change overs it's just a few drips. Craig Rogers 2007 Puma 110 XS 2011 Evoque Coupe Dynamic Lux www.craigrogers.photography |
