genuinely wish you good luck with that - it would be interesting to follow your build if you go that way.
Interesting to see Mercedes G Wagon G 500 4x4˛ portal setup has a huge bracing bar: Click image to enlarge |

I certainly wouldn't be fitting a portal kit to one of the 2.2s with suspect axle flanges!
The AULRO thread linked earlier is actually a very interesting read, if you have the stamina and a day to read it. Most of the issues were to do with the fact that the portal kit (a) inevitably puts much greater loads on the ends of original axles and (b) alters several key aspects of the suspension geometry, resulitng in significant loads on suspension components which they were not designed to take. I suspect the durability of the Tibus design (or rather, the durability of the LR bits that the Tibus design is attached to) will depend very much upon the way the vehicle is treated and the sort of driving it does. It will require more understanding and driver sympathy than a standard vehicle. It is interesting that the two best publicised users and vehicles have such different results. If you do fit a conversion, please please run a build thread and keep us fully informed! I really want to fit a set to my DC (out of the question because of cost for the foreseeable future sadly) for no reason other than they look so incredibly cool! |

And things like Anti-Squat and roll angle have to be addressed too. m

The Oz chap answered that question by stating that the prototype version was used on one, whilst his was an altered production version. |

I suspect that this rther depends on what you're using the vehicle for. If you want a rock crawler, it probably doesn't matter. If you want a rock crawler that will safely do 70mph on the tarmac as well, and handle as well (?) as a standard Defender, it - and a whole raft of other suspenesion geometry issues - matters a lot. Very few of the production vehicles with portals are designed or intended to be used as highway cruisers, they're pretty specialised off-roaders and for a good reason.
Yes indeed. "Oilworker" is running on prototype 5" offset portals on his 130, the Aussie fellow is running 4" offset early production portals, so significantly different. The 5" versions were better braced to the axle case from the start, the 4" originally had no braces and that seemed to be the cause of some of the early problems. I suspect that the use the vehicles got/get is also very different, since the Aussie fellow seemed to do a lot of rock crawling one-wheel-in-the-air type stuff (which seems to break things) whilst Oilworker seems to do more European-type stuff. The thing that stikes me most about any set-up which involves fitting aftermarket drop-boxes onto standard Landrover axle components from an engineering point-of-view is that the geometry of the drop box is inevitably going to increase massively the load on some components which were simply not designed to take the loads. Bearing in mind the already significant cost of the kit, it seems a false economy not to upgrade the axle case and flanges as well. In particular at the fron the loads on the steering swivels will be much greater than normal, and quite different to normal, and accelerated wear and premature failure of the swivels in highly likely. From an engineering/loading point of view it would be more satisfactory to fit the drop box on the inboard side of the swivel housing rather than the outboard, but that adds a whole raft of other problems. All that being said, I beleive that a Defender fitted with Tibus portals (particularly the latest incarnation which is supposedly much stronger than the version the Aussie chap fitted) would make and exceptionally capable off-roader, an driven sympathetically would be durable. It would also be a fun and cool project, shame the cost makes it rather unattainable! |

Anti Squat has a big impact on braking and bringing forwards traction on the ground. How many times do you see a stock LR/RR climbing a steep hill whilst the badly lifted car fails? m

Just one think - Oilworker used his 130 in Africa race, without any significant problem, caused by the portals. And I think, any problem with steering in high speed will be visible very fast in in this type of use. It is much harder than some "weekend offroad play" or "just travelling". "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

Just resurrecting this thread as I see that there is now a UK agent for the kit quite close to me - http://www.lvblimited.com/
Anyone know anything about them - LVB that is? |

I'd not heard of them until your post.
I wonder how many Tibus portal conversions there are in the UK, or the ROW for that matter. I would still love to be in the position to build a portal-Rover. |

Just another update on portal axles as i came across this company - maybe not the straight swap onto a defender but possible options...
https://www.axletech.com/en/products/suspe...-wheel-end or if you want to swap the whole axle out: https://www.axletech.com/en/products/axles/3000-series-portal |
