laptop advice
I'm thinking about getting a laptop and was wondering what the best spec would be. The wife wants to be able to do her coursework on it in the comfort of the lounge, I would occasionally use it for the Internet but I have my phone for that I would also occasionally use it for youtube.com but again I can mirror my phone on the TV which is probably better, I am also thinking of using it with simple obd11 software for talking to the jimny and roomster and also as a borescope as leads are only a few quid. So what sort of thing do I need as I am quite a long way from knowing how it works I just want it to work and be as fast as my galaxys5. Thanks in advance. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Look for a minimum spec i5 processor and at least 4gb ram

Windows 8.1 is the standard and later this year will be upgraded to windows 10 for free

I usually but hp or Panasonic - over the years I've had toshibas, dells also

Then consider if you want usb, Hdmi etc ports

Lightweight or ruggedised .. If you plan to travel a lot with it

Then it's just the budget

Ok thanks. Is there any disadvantages to getting a second hand one from the likes of cex or moneyspinner etc so long as it has this i5 thing? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

If you want it to boot up quickly go for a Solid state drive or hybrid , the difference in speed is phenomenal.
I5 processor and as much RAM as you can afford.

I'm a fan of Acer laptops, my last one did me for 8 years, plenty of abuse with being taken on camping holidays, used by kids for their homework plus use by me. I replaced it with another Acer as the OS became too old to be compatible with t'internet when my boys were trying to do their homework. I looked at the likes of PCWorld and the like, yes the deals are inviting but they're often there to rid the companies of soon to be replaced stock. I ended up buying off the t'internet straight from the online Acer store getting me the latest model, double the amount of memory and all for £150 cheaper than anything that came close to what I could find on the High Street

apart from my laptops (because I'm fussy and love Thinkpads) I have got all our recent work computers from the Dell Outlet. The stock varies but you can usually get some pretty good deals. Me being a luddite I find it preferable to keep all the ones at work on Windows 7 which makes supporting them easier for me.

The most recent two I've bought have both had 5 year warranties which is very nice, that was a laptop and a desktop for £320+vat each, both with 4GB RAM and Core i5 processors. Yes, I am aware that a desktop i5 is rather different to a laptop i5.

I'm no expert, but I bought a Lenovo last year based solely on price and immediate availability and had no problems.
The Windows 8.1 takes a bit of getting used to though.

Or just leave all the stress, viruses, expensive updates, expensive software, malware, crashes, and drivers behind and get a Mac!!

I made the switch 4 years ago and wouldn't touch Windows with a barge pole Thumbs Up I still have the same MacBook and it's as quick as it's ever been, and is running all up to date software- most PCs are left behind in a year or two

Go to an Apple Store and get someone to show you around one, they're just better. Cheers, David

Totally agree, A Mac's the way forward I couldn't go back to a windows system either, is prehistoric compared to a Mac IMO.

Ditto,

Better, faster (for longer), smarter,

Worse only in terms of initial price - but they last at least 2 of another lesser type of course Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
