Tablet. I considerd DD but the downsides were:
Cost (the Head Unit and if a full face DD, then the new dash as well) Faff of putting it all together Lack of Flexibility You say you don't need mapping, but why not, useful APs out there not able to be used for SatNav Look (as you say, an upgrade too far?) Etc etc. I went for a 'media interface' head unit with BT, Sim, Ipod, USB etc etc. Housed in usual spot. For Tablet I will be going for Samsung Galaxy Tab Activ with added Garmin, OS and French mapping plus other nav bits and bobs. as the tablet is only wi-fi though how will it calculate the routing and/or search POI's whilst not connected? Corris Grey 110 XS SW

Don't quote me on this, but an IT friend said through the GPS. It is something I want to check too. If it will not work, I'll go for standard model. I was thinking iPad Mini, but given it'll stay in the 110 and not be used with my other Apple bits and bobs, I cannot see why I would pay twice as much for the same basic kit.... Last year in France and Spain I used Nav Free on my iPad mini, the iPad has to be 3G/4g version as that has GPS it doesn't use any data as it uses the GPS.
It worked really well. |

As already said, you need a 3G version as the GPS module is shared circuitry with the mobile transmitter/receiver. WiFi only versions don't have GPS sadly.
There are plenty of free or paid for navigation apps that don't require a data connection - Nav Free is one I've used although these days I pretty much exclusively use Apple maps for turn by turn navigation. Apple maps does need data connectivity when you first set the route though which makes it less useful in remote areas. You mention Australia and to me that clinches the decision, we used an iPad almost exclusively for navigation around Australia using Apple Maps in the cities for turn by turn and Hema maps everywhere else. Hema maps app is a version of Memory Map bundled with all the HEMA maps of Australia including decent scale maps of popular areas and GPS verified dirt tracks. If you use it in conjunction with the HEMA off road routes map book you can use the book as your paper backup and get ideas on the best tracks to drive. When walking we used HEMA maps on an iPhone (same account as iPad so no extra cost) and this was also a backup navigation system if the iPad failed in the vehicle although we never needed it. If you are camping then you can also load WikiCamps on the iPad, it works "offline" and is a really good way to find suitable free and paid camping spots. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I use navfree too. works good on IOS and android systems ad it's free. At least for Android.

I use TomTom on iOS for on road navigation and ViewRanger for off-road.
I can use both on iPhone and iPad and can run them without using data if required. The upgradeability for both software and hardware is the biggest draw for me, I had one of the early RoadAngel Memory Map devices but it was very quickly obsolete. The choice between Apple and Android is a personal one, some love them and some hate them. Non iOS tablets are becoming very competitive now. Sandy |

double din all day long for me. looks more standard than tablet. have all the bluetooth hands free, apps, navigation, ipod/phone control.
i have one in each of the defenders, a must have for me. |

Tablet for me in the LR. I have built in nav in the work saloon and actually prefer the iOS nav / tablet experience.

All my previous motors had in-built and damn fine SatNav units, so it was a major worry, for me, at first when I decided to go for a Defender...
Since then, I have purchased one of the best and most flexible mounting systems available in the RAM Mounts and am happily using my iPhone 6 for all SatNav trips - perfect with Apple Maps and never had a wrong turn, yet... 
If I ever needed a bigger screen I would use either SWMBO's iPad Mini or my own iPad connected through my iPhone's Personal Hotspot function to maintain GPS location services... 
Oh, and it then would simply need the appropriate iPad adaptor for the RAM Mounting system...  Rog...

As said,, Tablet with 3g, for the GPS,, Also have a single din Pioneer Nav unit in the 110 giving BT phone, music,back up screen,etc, never really bother with it for nav I use co Pilot on the I pad, Got us all round NZ with no problem, even when at times when no signal California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |
