Rear winch
I saw a neat rear winch today on a defender on the motorway. It was a traffic jam so I spoke to the owner....he said it was fitted by cutting back the rear cross member. Does anyone know of a known technique for this and any other options. I really liked the look of it as it was flush with the rear "bumper" flat metal bit across the back (whatever it's called!!) any brackets on the market?

I can make you one like mine, It bolts on to the rear x member and has a 2" receiver built in.

I am on a different computer so I will post pics in the morning. Thumbs Up 2003 Td5 90

Easier way is to fit via a Devon 4x4 rear winch cross member

It was built by Devon, it was literally a letter box cut into the x-m, they since developed what Tim posted up, though it's easy enough to do Thumbs Up

The rear petrol tank from td5 onwards limits how flush you can get it though - and I'm not sure about having one stick out as far as it would need to ...

I have a problem with the letter box style.
When Land Rover designed the rear cross member with all the holes in it it had to have a type approval. Now if you had a rusted hole that size it would be a M.O.T. failure so how do get a pass with the same size hole deliberately cut into it? Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

If you are going to all that effort could you make one like the Ibex that could run out to the front or the back?

Or you can just rig your front winch for a rearwards pull an save all the effort?

There's always the 2" receiver option which you can put on the front and the back.
This way you only need 1 winch for either end, and keep it in doors when not used, which keeps it clean.
Of course you won't have the "look" but if that's your main objective you wouldn't probably be interested in the back winch anyway.

Not to mention the extra cost in case of an accident...

rear tank as mentioned is biggest issue.

rear winches also tend to get a lock more crud in them than front (usually lower down) and how many times do you end up stuck part way up something with the rear sat in the mud a while. plus vac at rear driving doesnt help maintain it.

cl2 option is a good practical way around it but depends on how often you are going to need it and if you envisage needing to operate two winches at once. (ie front and rear) Cheers

Thanks Zone30, that's good to know. As it happens I prefer the look of the Bowler bumper and was wondering how a winch might fit (if at all) but that it might ruin the look of an expensive item. Maybe this would be the way to go....? Monsieur Le Grenadier
