The world's most northerly Defender?
Is this the world's most northerly Defender?

I was in Arctic Svalbard in December and taken from Longyearbyen (78 degrees N) in this Defender. Photos taken around mid-day as it was permanently dark.

He simply smashed through the snow that had built up at the gate, hence the snow on the headlamp.

He also had a Land Cruiser and said "The Land Cruiser is more comfortable, but the Defender is more reliable".

Anyway, was pleased and surprised when it picked me up.

It's not often you hear someone say a Land Rover is more reliable than a Toyota! Razz

Hi, very impressed you went over to Svalbard. Do you mind me asking what you were doing up there at that time of year as I notice bird watchers etc tend to go spring/ early summer and just planning out when best to go myself

It was just a holiday...a few days in Tromso and then flew up to Svalbard to do husky sledding, ice caving and a look around. It's an interesting place in winter if you like desolate places but gets busier with cruise ships in summer. Has a feel of a frontier town in winter but not terribly cold, about -8c or so due to the gulf stream.

Finland at -27c was much colder a couple of weeks ago! 2008 Defender 110

We are off there later this year, really looking forward to it

Good to see working defenders there and no need for a radiator blanket Thumbs Up

You did not pay attention to which winter tires he is running, did you? From your last picture the pattern look like they could be the Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT (not the LT2), possibly studded, but not fully certain about that.
Confirmation would be a good indication on here for what is a really good winter tire to run in what you can describe as extreme wintry conditions.
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

You're right, they were Nokian Hakkapeliitta because I remember looking as I was thinking about getting winter tyres but can't remember if they were LT or LT2. 2008 Defender 110

^^ Ok, clear then. If they were Nokians indeed, the picture corresponds with the pattern of the original LT version (which I also use), but which 2 years ago was superseded by the LT2. Great(est) wintertire for a Defender. Thumbs Up
