I was a fitter for a number of years, fitting literally thousands of 'string-in' screens. Unless your rubber is perished and cracked, it shouldn't leak.
Sealer will just make a mess and puke out from the edges with time.
I'd be more worried about the many other leaks that Defenders come with.

A Defender screen is one of the easiest to fit, I shouldn't worry at all.
