Nah, you don't need studded ones. We did it with cooper discoverers with no hairy moments.

Had thought of that but that just makes more hassle for when not driving in snow ice as would have to carry extra wheel tyres for when driving on the road... |

Tristan when are you going ? we dove there and back on General Grabers that came as standard with the vehicle in july last year and saw lots of snow on the route but very little on the actual road (We now have BFG ATR2 as these are snow rated and very durable) if you are going on a winter trek in an ice covered wilderness then from what I heard you will need more than just tyres as snow chains are required as well. its a wonderful trip - you'll have a great time. Cooper discoverers are studdable is they have small holes in the tread for screw in studs to be fitted
Discoverers come in a few flavours, if you have the budget you want snow/ winter compound not m&s I used discoverers and took studs but did not fit them Oslo City tax you if you drive thru with studs fitted |

No studs. Came back from Nordkapp a week ago. Driving on compacted snow and sheet ice for two weeks. As I said, no troublesome moments. You adapt a measured driving style. No point in studded tyres as you will have to take two sets for countries that don't allow studs e.g. the uk |

265/70/16 Cooper Discoverer M+S2. They can be studded if you want. Mine weren't and felt really sure footed throughout the trip. The roads varying conditions from clear tarmac through to sheet ice. Corners were no problem if taken at a sensible speed, but I was amazed what was possible. We took chains but never needed them. The E6 up through Norway is always ploughed and kept clear. Once off the main drag roads become mixed but the tyres still performed well. Brilliant trip and was well worth the 5000+ miles in the two and a half weeks.
