Bit of a shame that the episode i watched on sunday there has to be the worst episode in the history of top gear. Absolutely abismal.. Not 1 car was tested. Not 1. Im all for the lads arsing around a little and having a giggle but that was just awful.

On a slightly different note. I can understand a safety being used for the series film but isnt that winch setup total overkill? I mean that series isnt the heaviest vehicle out there. Im sure a more normal off the shelf winch would be more than capable?

Perhaps it's used elsewhere now they've built it, they might need it to winch all the egos up onto the stage at filming.

@ Supacat, I know you sometimes come across bloopers but I think a lot of these shows could cash in on a DVD on the making of the programme. There's a lot that goes on behind the scenes and quite a few companies would benefit from showing what they are capable of. It's not just Top Gear, think of Guy Martin, there's allready been a mention from one of the members on here about his father-in-law having something to do with building the turbo for the Pikes Peak Challenge bike. Remember how Fred Dibnah used to take the cameras into the various places he went to to get bits for his traction engines, that was riveting telly for me!

I thought I'd read a defence of this from Clarkson himself - something along the lines of the series budget didn't stretch to the costs involved in the full on car reviews they do for every episode; so they have a filler episode where the costs are kept right down.

Not sure how true it is...but you're right it was an awful episode Rolling Eyes

Thanks JWL for the update

Let’s see what they make of it, hopefully in the process doing the Land Rover justice.

Personally I find the irreverent tone of Top Gear increasingly irritating, my wife quite likes the ‘boys on a road trip’ episodes but maybe I just have to acknowledge it’s not really aimed at me. I have to agree with need4speed the last show was utter rubbish…

The viewing figures and the international sales for Top Gear clearly support the direction the show has taken all helping to make Clarkson the highest paid BBC presenter in 2013-2014… and he’s just signed for the next 3 years, despite the controversies of 2014… so more of the same... Yawn SKIP

The 'gubbins' in the back of the Land Rover would have been the only power source.
It would be impossible to run a Rover engine at that angle for more than a few seconds.

Makes you wonder whether that power plant in the back moves to a 45' angle on the frame so the engine and pump stays level.

It was done more recently with a Defender Ninety with a Warn winch fitted.
Charged batteries were constantly lowered down after short distances.



I believe the winch cable lencths were 'adjusted' several times while the winch cooled down. Rolling Eyes

That one was done with a static winch mounted in the mocked up concrete blockhouse on the top of the dam according to many.

The original advert (filmed at the Clywedog Dam) was successfully done in some sorts. The dam in Top Gear is not the original dam, probably because Clywedog is steeper and longer than the one in the Top Gear attempt.

As far as I'm aware, they did do some of the winching by installing huge batteries in the back, however, this was before the filming took place.

It was something to do with false advertising, which ironically just seems to be allowed these days. For the actual take, it was winched up by an industrial winch at the top of the dam. Craig Rogers

it is interesting that if you compare the original advertisement footage with photos of Clywedog Dam there are several "structures" in the advertisement tht aren't actually there normally. It is also pretty evident that the escapade depicted in the ad is not technically feasible without a lot of outside help and certainly not with the simple electric winch installation seen in close-up on the vehicle.

I also think that it looks as though the water at the foot of the dam is rather deeper than the water the vehicle is initially emerging from.

Has anyone else noticed how nearly the 90 in the advertisement comes to rolling end-over-end at the very start where the driver leaves the road? The back end is well clear of the ground.

I don't know if there was an actual human in the original 90, but I reckon there's be a real hamster in the 80 on Top Gear. All I can say is that he must have some cojones to ride up in that, it must be terrifying!

It is a very nice 80" in the Top Gear photos, I hope that they treat it with respect and don't hurt it!

You might be right x-isle... but unsurprisingly at this point there is confusion over actually how they did this.

It may be revealed in the show, but I doubt it, the illusion will be that the Land Rover winches itself
up the Dam, even if it took converting the 80''LR to a Hybrid 1/2 Diesel 1/2 Electric to do this, with a rear
full of kit, it is in some way still impressive.

At the beginning of the year, in an evening with Top Gear, Hammond said two things about this stunt from memory
1. It was the scariest thing he's done on Top Gear and
2. We did it properly the Land Rover winches itself up the Dam.

anyway like the original advertisement a degree of creative licence appears to have been taken to pull this off. SKIP
