Clutch is not a 'biggy. 'You get good and bad....must have been built on a Friday. Get rid. ![]() Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Maybe a bit extreme to get rid?
8 y.o. car shouldn't need a clutch, granted, on those miles, but it's not uncommon. Get someone who knows what they're on about to fit a good replacement and you'll be good to go and it should outlast the previous one. You'll never get a good financial deal changing cars, full stop, so unless there's something different you really want then why bother? Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

Bearing in mind it's an 07, I would expect it to be on its third clutch at least by now.

Sounds like you have got a badly maintained Defender.
Spend a couple of days scanning through BMW, Audi and Mercedes forums to see how many problems other more comtemporary vehicles and brands display. This might help. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MT´s, Recaro CS´s, anorak, wellingtons |

That is a very good point wildcard. It doesnt matter if you speak to bmw, merc, vw, audi etc etc mechanic. Every one of them will say they are crap. Furthermore when you visit said mechanics you will find engines and gearboxes lying around all over the place...

Don't feel ashamed. I was trailered home three times in as many months, and that was the first three months from new. Just accept that they aren't the latest in technology and that they can be repaired anywhere (well perhaps not the electronics). They are just maintenance heavy.
As mine was built on Friday 5nov07 you can expect all the usual problems, including the clutch. I changed mine after reading about the problems on 07 builds. The only cars I've had that were 100% reliable were rice burners. But not so enjoyable. Think of it as a trade off for all the good times. Merlin |

In 32 years owning cars, only broken down twice. Both times Range Rovers. 19 days to go til I pick up my first Defender. May be mad, but after a few years of just driving (non LRs), I'm really excited about a car again. Really hope it lasts (the excitement and the Defender!) Great site, enjoying following the discussions. Enjoy! Martin |

Thanks for all the comments, nice wide range as ever.
I'll be keeping the defender for the time being, just had a big service, and now a new clutch. I can live with the minor niggles, not a mechanic, but i'm reasonable with a spanner. It's the pricey failures that concern me, hopefully I can do 2015 with just a minor service and putting fuel in, oh and THAT road tax ![]() ![]() Drove back from garage today after new clutch fitment, she drove well, except gear leaver was no longer spring loaded ie after coming out of any gear it should return to center neutral, made gear selection very tricky like pushing lever in porrige if you get my drift. So back I went and explained the problem. They took a look, and I was told theres an adjuster at bottom of lever below rubber cover. They adjusted it, and shes back to norm.
