Mine seem to. Although with the weight of the engine and vehicle bearing down on the front whilst breaking they may perhaps wear marginally quicker perhaps?

they ought to. My BFGs still have those bobbly bits on the treads that new tyres have for a bit until they wear - and thats after nearly 2 years and 28k km

Unfortunately, mine did not wear evenly, the fronts exhibited more wear than the rears. I was planning to do a 5 tire rotation but the unexpected excessive wear of the fronts killed that idea. Thing is, I've only run 10,000 KMs before scheduling the re-balance and rotation which is pretty standard. Does this mean I'll have to do rotations every 5,000 KMs if I want to do 5 tire rotations?
If it helps, the truck is running boost alloys with 235/85/R16 Federal Couragias which came with the truck when I bought it off the previous owner. Speaking of 5 tire rotations, is there a special pattern I have to follow for Defenders or do I just follow standard 5 tire rotations for 4x4s? For the meantime, what I did was cross the fronts and advanced the rears. As always, your input is greatly appreciated. |

Generally I find mine tend to wear fairly evenly all round, front slightly faster than the rear. Since I always run MTs of some kind, the tyres themselves tend (as do all MTs) to wear directionally and to suffer from crenellation (uneven wear of adjacent tread blocks - one high, one low, one high etc) especially if driven fast on tarmac. Because of this I rotate them FOS to RNS and FNS to ROS every 10k miles or so, which for me is two or three time a year. Swapping them like this results in a front/rear swap, and a rotation reversal.
The result is that tyre wear is very even, rotation effects are managed, crenellation tends to be reduced, and typically I will get 90k to 100k miles from a set of BFG M/Ts. After this they'll be down to about 6mm of tread, at which point I replace them and generally can sell the old set since they still have many legal miles left in them. |

Thanks for the tip, blackwolf. I noticed the uneven wear on the mud tires as well.
In any case, what you suggest is still a 4 tire rotation, so I'm guessing no real way to include the spare into the rotation party? |

Not easily, but my spare sits on the carrier unused so doesn't wear. If worried about age, when you get a new set put one of the new ones on the carrier and run the former spare on the road.

That would be good if you are sticking to the same kind of tire, but then age is still a factor with the newly placed in spare. Another issue would be if you wanted to change tire types.

Front's should wear quicker than the rears.
They have to deal with the steering (although the rears are effectively dragged around corners too), but more importantly, they deal with more of the breaking forces. Any car, RWD, FWD or AWD should still wear them out quicker. However, saying that, my Jag XK used to wear out the rears quicker than the fronts due to the DSC on the rear wheels working quite a lot. Thanks for the illustrations Supacat! As with x-isle's experience, does this mean we do tire rotations now at 5,000 KMs rather than 10,000 KMs or are my current tires just really not up to it? |

If I was rotating 5 I would do so at shorter intervals than if I was rotating 4.

I tend to just do a front to back switch without crossing over and I don't touch the spare.

Will just run and rotate the current set and then when I get a new set, will try doing 5,000 KMs rotations to see if that will be better. |
