Aircon Fan

Seems that this issue is becoming.... well. a bigger issue.

Aircon fan is on full time...?? I just drove 30 miles on the highway, and when I pulled in the driveway and opened the hood, the rad was stone cold. As matter of fact, opening the hood there was barely any warmth wafting out. Uasually a good 5 mins on the highway and the heater blows nice and hot. However today, it was blowing cold (there was a fair amount of uphill on my drive, so the engine was working hard, which should also good for producing heat.) Ambient temp was about 8ºC.

Upper rad hose was slightly warm, lower, cold, coolant was pretty much full down just under a litre.

No codes, tested the thermostat, the aircon relay, everything is checking out.

I know these engines never idle warm, but I think the full time AC fan isn't helping. I know it's controlled by the ECU, and it's a combination of engine temperature and speed that are supposed to control it via the ECU.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Aircon fan on full time usually means an overheating issue. Mine was a faulty sensor.
You say no fault codes, did you get the engine temp from the ECU? What was that reading? It wasn't me!

I had similar - the AC fan cuts in when the engine overheats/coolant low. I had similar symptoms on a V8 - the coolant level had dropped a bit low. JB

Even when turning the engine on from a cold start, the fan comes on. It's daintily not an overheating issue.

Does the ECU know its not overheating? Mine had no faults stored, ran constantly from cold and ran normally after the sensor swap. It wasn't me!

2005 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Zambezi Silver

It is my understanding that the A/C fan on the Td5cuts in at 28 degrees ambient temperature I think it gets its reading from the sensor in the air filter box, could this be faulty ? Could be worth unplugging it and seeing what happens. 2005 Td5 90 XS

I had exactly the same problem. Had the air con re-gassed (even though it was running very cold) and that fixed it.
