225/75 r16s on a 110 puma?
Hi all,

Been following this forum for a while, finally found a reason to post!

I have a 110 Puma for the last 4 years, hugely enjoy it, although there was a bit of adjustment necessary from my side, especially at the beginning, but maybe more about that in a post elsewhere on this forum Wink.

It has steel rims and the original 7.50R16 tyres, which have served me decently since most of my driving has been on paved and dirt roads. Not so great in mud though Wink. Also in winter they leave a bit to be desired in term of grip, as I've experienced a few times. This last bit is an issue as where I live road clearance in the mountains is more a luxury than a given.

Anyway, this year I'll be hitting the mountains more often, and I want to get full on winter tyres, but the choice is pretty limited here in the defender tyre size. What is available, at a decent price even, are a set of hankook rw11s, but they are sized 225/75r16. Not my first choice, but there really isn't much else available and I need to tyres rather urgently.

Does anyone have an experience with this tyre size on a 110? What would the main downsides be (besides the wimpy looks of course Rolling Eyes ).

Thanks for any feedback!

Mik

i ran them on a 90 back in 95. they are smaller RD than 7.50s and vehicle will loose top speed and rev more for any given true speed. Cheers

You can get 7.50 mud tyres if you want, things like the Michelin XZL.
You've probably got Michelin Latitude Cross tyres on at the moment, I quite like them and you can do an awful lot worse IMO.

If you do want other tyres, there are loads in the 235/85 size which is often said to be the "metric equivalent" of 7.50, which I don't quite get as it's far wider. Anyway, for tyres that size (they're standard fit to a lot of Defenders) you'll need wider rims than the standard steel rims, either the heavy duty "Wolf" steel rims, Boost alloys, other alloys (genuine or otherwise) or modulars.

Have a look at these threads:

In my opinion, 235/85/16 is the only wheel size that looks right on a defender... Lots of winter tyre options too Cheers, David

Great, thanks for the feedback!

Cupboard, I agree that the Michelin Latitude Cross tyres which I have are not bad - in fact I am quite happy with them day to day - it is just in more extreme use cases they reach their limit (like any tyre of course!). Thanks for the links, very useful!

I also agree with the rest that 235/85/16 would be great. My problem is that there simply isn't much of a choice here in Georgia (the country) at the moment in that size, and while they can order tyres from Europe, they claim it will take about a month for them to arrive.

As my current tyres are quite worn, and I am supposed to be driving a lot in the snowy mountains over the next weeks, I decided to just bite the bullet and get the 225/75/16s for the next few weeks, and try to sell them later. Did a bit of driving with them now, and have to admit that just as jst said, there is a notable difference in top speed and revs, much more than I would have expected. You have to shift a whole lot quicker than before, and if you thought that first was short before, you should try it with smaller wheels Wink.

It also seems like I can see that the car is sitting lower when I am driving, although there probably my mind really is playing games with me Smile. I'll post if any more interesting insights come up. Thanks again! Trying to Live that One Life
