2.4 engine failure
Hello all
I have been experiencing engine malfunctioning, injection related I believe. Randomly while in idle, revs go up and down from the 750 idle rpm up to 1000rpm. Sometimes, revs go so low the engine shuts down. When it shuts down, I re-start it, starts normally until the problem re appears (can be a few minutes or the next day). When on the road, the enigne sort of "hesitates" and gets normal again only if I go full throttle for a few seconds. Whenever these symptoms occur the injectors make strange sounds, announcing something is wrong.
10k km ago I changed serpentine and its pulley/tensor at the dealer. I will replace my fuel filter in a few days hope it helps.
I would really appreciate thoughts on this and/or experiences if any of you have had similar issues and how you got it sorted.

Also between gear changes sometimes revs drop translating in powerloss and strange noise from the injectors

Try it with the fuel filler cap loosened? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I had exactly that problem last year, Stratstone Doncaster fixed it on the 2nd attempt. You could ring them and ask to speak Craig in service and say I sent you.

Could well be the infamous Volume Control Valve on the fuel pump.

Hi Red Dot thanks for your reply I gave it a try but its still the same.
Shaun thanks mate, the problem is Im overseas so... How did he fix it what was the problem?
Blackwolf thanks alot my friend your posts are always very helpful. So in case that is the problem, where can I get this volume control valve? If you know of a website I can buy it from so I can get it shipped to Panama. I havent had much luck trying to import spares as a retail so I am constantly buying at the dealers and this Defender is just becoming unsustainable every time at the dealer its atleast $500 for anything. I get new small insignificant issues almost every month that in the uk would be less than 60 pounds (or $100) but here I get ripped off constantly between november and today I have spent more than $4k in simple things but since its my only option I have to cope. If this keeps going like this Im going to have to put it away and use a jap truck. I find the truck reliable and useful the problem is the local cost of parts

The VCV should be available from any Ford or Landrover dealer, and they are often now to be found on Ebay. The Landrover part number is LR009837, and the Ford part numberis 1 514 885 (engineering part number 6C1Q 9358 AB). the part typicallly costs around £130 to £140 in the UK.

Remember that you will need to carry out a pump recalibration operation with a diagnostic tools afterwards and not all tools can do this (Nanocom for example can't).

The VCV is also sometimes described by other names, eg Suction Control Valve, so finding one on Ebay can be tricky!

Tempting to get one as a spare, they really aren't very durable. The Ford parts department told me that they are one of the "fastest moving items".

Thank you Blackwolf I will get this done after I get the part. Only the dealer has the diagnostic equipment for the calibration so after I replace it to the dealer it will be. The engine got better since yesterday I emptied the water from the fuel filter. It was mainly water so when it stopped coming out the filter was empty so air got in. After bleeding the system with an air compressor it works better. Revs are not completely stable yet, but it improved considerably. I will order the part online and when it gets here I will replace it.

Interesting. When I was suffering similar problems to yours (see the thread I started "contaminated fuel") I spoke to someone I know who is very helpful and the senior vehicle tech at a main dealer. He told me that whenever they have a 2.4 Defender in with any water contamination of the fuel, they now change the VCV as a matter of routine, since it is invariably damaged by the water. The same is the case if dirty fuel has made it past the filter.

It was very evident from him that the VCV is fragile in this respect. I bought my replacement from a Ford main dealer for convenience, and the parts manager said they sell loads, he said it was the fastest moving engine part.
