2.4 New ECU??
I have a 2008 2.4 Defender that is having issues. It regularly goes in to limp mode and won't pass 2000rpm. On resetting the fault codes it will run fine for a few days.

These are the fault codes:

P0089 fuel pressure regulator
P0100 Maf Flow 'A' Circuit signal frequenct too low
P068A ECM/PCM Power relay de-energised too early

P0089 is generally caused by irregular HP fuel rail pressures, possibly the pressure relief valve leaking or a faulty volume control valve.

P0100 if recurring is most likelt to be caused by a faulty MAF sensor.

Neither the MAF sensor nor the VCV is particularly expensive, not sure about the valve.

P068A is most likely to be due to having diagnostic equipent plugged into the OBD socket.

Relevent questions include is the vehicle standard or remapped, has the EGR been disabled? P0100 is common on some (especially early) remaps.

There is a lot of information on the forum about these fault codes ("search" button in the middle of the menu bar at top of screen).

I am sure that others will chip in with more information soon.

Yeah I've been searching quite a bit, both on here and 'tinternet in general, that's how I managed to conclude it may be the ECU. Got me more questions than answers if I'm honest.

It's totally standard. No remaps or blank offs.

In the absence of any more informed suggestions, I would replace the VCV and MAF sensor and see if that sorted it. It will be cheaper (lots) than a new ECU.

The VCV will require a fuel pump learn operation afterwards which cannot be done with some diagnostic tools (eg not nanocom, but faultmate can).

OK.

So here's what has happened. The independent has installed new software. It is certainly running a lot smoother so far, albeit a bit smoky. He said he couldn't do the 'pilot learn' on the injectors, it fails because of the ambient temperature. This could be either - it's too cold (3C) or something more serious (ECU).

I will run it for now and see what happens, if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to chip in as I'd like to avoid shelling out for a new ECU.

The pilot correction learn needs to be done with the engine HOT.
It is also one thing which uses up spare memory in the ECU, IIRC it can only be done a finite number of times before all the available memory slots are used and a new ECU is required. There is a way round this but it requires specialist equipment (Pete Bell mentioned this during his puma development work).

A faulty VCV as already mentioned will also cause the pilot correction learn to fail with poor drivability but no associated error codes, a successful pilot learn may occur with a faulty VCV but drivability issues will soon reappear.

Viewing the live MAF values should indicate whether it is this at fault and live fuel rail pressures should either implicate or exonerate the pressure relief valve.

I know about the engine temp, it won't let you proceed with the pilot learning until it reaches 60 - 85. my Hawkeye pro just stopped half way through.

The computer at the ILS couldn't complete the process either it reckons that the ambient temperature is incompatible. The ILS said that could point to ECU failure because the ambient temperature sensor is working fine (3c).

A faulty ECU isn't the only thing that will cause the pilot learn to fail, see http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29678.html

Also a faulty VCV can cause the pressure release valve on the fuel rail to pop.

From Landrover (Topix) description of P0089

P0089-7A
Fuel pressure regulator performance
Fuel rail pressure limiting valve has activated

The fuel rail pressure limiting valve operates as a disposable item in the event of excess system pressure. Once activated the valve cannot be guaranteed leak free and should be replaced. Install a new fuel rail pressure limiting valve.
REFER to: Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (303-04A Fuel Charging and Controls - 2.4L Duratorq-TDCi HPCR (103kW/140PS) - Puma, Removal and Installation).

and P0100

P0100- 36
Mass or volume air flow A circuit - Signal frequency too low
Mass air flow (MAF) sensor circuit: short circuit to ground MAF sensor circuit: short circuit to power MAF sensor circuit: open circuit
MAF sensor fault

Check the MAF sensor and circuit. Refer to the electrical guides. Install a new MAF sensor if necessary.

Clear the DTC's and test for normal operation

Most fault code readers only display the first four digits of the DTC.

As blackwolf said, change the MAF first (its the cheapest)

MAF MHK501040 about £44
VCV LR009837 about £138
Pressure release valve LR006866 about £186 Shocked
2.4 ECU NNN501630 about £360

Prices from total parts.co.uk - about the same as from L/R dealers - most of these can be got cheaper.

OK so, fitted Pressure release valve LR006866. Still won't do the pilot learn.

Any ideas?

An eBay seller i've come across sells the following parts much cheaper and they appear to be genuine:

It's a Hawkeye pro. It gets as far as saying the engine temp need to be 65 - 80, reads the temperature (82 when I tried it last) then says "the following procedure can take 240 seconds to complete" then crashes saying "conditions not correct"

The ILS has an auto logic I think, it's a big blue box with a large screen. He said it wouldn't complete because it didn't like the ambient temperature? That was before the new pressure release valve so I might get him to try it again.

I'm surprised to hear that the ECU is only £360, I guess I'd need to get someone to program it to the Landy, if it comes to that?

Have you replaced the VCV and the pressure relief valve then, as above you say it is the pressure relief valve replaced? Unless I have missed the bit about VCV also being replaced?

To be honest I hadn't read previous comments properly and thought it was the same thing.

I've only replaced the pressure release valve. I'll get the VCV ordered off eBay and fit that too.
