Duckworth Land Rover, based in Boston and Market Rasen, has offered to loan four-wheel drive vehicles to police and essential health services if snow storms hit Lincolnshire this year. During the severe winter of 2010, Duckworth loaned 10 4x4 vehicles to help services get through to towns and villages which were otherwise inaccessible. That year the firm completely sold out of its stock of second-hand 4x4 vehicles. This year they have ensured the forecourts are ready for an influx of buyers, with more than 60 available across the two dealerships. The company’s managing director Ben Duckworth said services in need of help should contact Duckworth if freezing temperatures hit. “The company has been serving customers in this county for several decades,” he said. “All of our staff live in this community and we all have family, friends and neighbours we want to ensure are safe,” “If there are communities stranded as a result of extreme weather we want to do everything we can to help. “Any crucial or emergency services that need help should contact us and we will provide them with the 4x4 vehicles that will get them through even the most difficult conditions.” Duckworth has also released a list of vital driving tips to help motorists stay safe this winter. • Only use lukewarm water or de-icer to defrost the outside of your vehicle. Never use hot or boiling water. • Make sure any auto wiper control is switched off before turning the ignition on as this could blow the wiper control fuse if they are frozen to the screen. • Be prepared for every eventuality by ensuring your car is equipped with the following: demisting pad, torch (wind-up so you don’t run out of battery), spare screen wash, de-icer, ice scraper, blanket, shovel, phone charger, map and a square of carpet that you can use to put under your drive wheels should you get stuck in the snow. • If you’re driving to meet someone, let them know where you are travelling and when you expect to arrive. • You may need to leave as much as 10 times the normal recommended gap (two second rule) between you and the car in front. • If you do encounter a skid, steer gently into it - for example, if the rear of the car is sliding to the right, steer to the right. Do not take your hands off the steering wheel or stamp your foot on the brakes. • A higher gear may be more appropriate to aid the tyres gripping when moving off on packed ice.
