In about 1980 I was driving someone else's Subaru of some description (I forget what, it wasn't memorable) when the engine earth strap broke. Since the alternator was then earthed to the battery only via the throttle cable the cable became extremely hot and melted the plastic cable sheath. I only found this out after I had stopped for a while, and the melted plastic cooled and solidified, completley locking up the cable.

The only way I could get back to civilisation was to take two bootlaces, tie them together for length, tie one end to the throttle quadrant on the carb and bring the other end in through the passenger side window as a rudimentary hand throttle. In the end I drove about 100 miles like this.

The most difficult thing was double-declutching (which I always tend to do) since it involved holding the steering wheel with the right knee, working the clutch with the left foot, the bootlace with the right hand, andchanging gear with the left hand!

Fixed a leaking radiator by putting in an egg. It was one of the get you home fixes from Land Rover's "Working in the wild "handbook. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Quite sure. I was wearing trainers but had walking boots with me, I will also now admit that the double-declutching was completely unecessary, I simply wanted to see if it was possible.
