cause and effects
Not sure if I'm going to get shouted at here but I thought this would be a great idea - and I'm assuming if I think it's a good idea lots of others will as I'm Mr average?

I was thinking it would be great to have an understanding of what does what within the ECM.

Ie the fashioned manual choke which gives rich fuel mix, I presume something similar happens but under what circumstances and can it be monitored etc

What impact does road speed have on engine characteristics such as idle speed

I understand the clutch switch affects the engine characteristics (possibly more than just rev hang)

The ABS is linked to the ECM - why what does it do.

These ECM's are proper powerful and it would be great to know more about them.

Not much help no. Razz

Another question would be....idle jack / anti stall. I presume this is more than a simple increase of the loud pedal?

I far as I know the map is really just a 3d graph that the sensors give the point on the graph that's needed for for that power/torque needed at a given point

cold start would be idle up a bit , bit richer just done on temp really

be honest I would call a ecm that powerful

Maybe I don't know but with some many variables and processing them in so frequently i'd have thought it would have to fairly powerful?

Regarding the cold start the good old choke gave a richer mix not just increased revs and I'd have thought it would be more complicated now by far....as seems to be the norm.

Re the jack idle. I believe some of the old motor bikes had an ability to adjust the timing for increased torque I believe - again I would expect something considerably more complicated and certainly not just an increased throttle position?

Is it just me or is this sort of stuff really interesting?

All things considered you ask a very good question, how and what does that little black box do !!

Have you ever heard of V.A.W Hillier`s. Fundamentals of motor vehicle technology books.
These are a must have for anyone wanting to study motor vehicles.
I`ll bet anyone on here that has workshop experience, has one tucked away some where.

Get your self a copy / s of these and all will become clear. Or at least it did for me all those years ago. Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

'all those years ago '

As interesting as the books might be would they be relevant?

I suspect the pumps ecm is in a very different league to the ecu's of c 15 years ago for example?

Thanks all the same.....need get some and ditch the fiction / thriller books.

Thumbs Up

News just in from amazon, there is a 2012 edition. About £20 ish
Looks like an updated 2004 version. It does cover the dpf system where as the 2004 edition does not.
So it looks like, when the other half gets in from tai chi class she`s getting me a new book !!

Yes it`s this years holiday reading.

I wish it was 15 years ago. More like 25 years ago !!
Thumbs Up Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.
