Here's my 2008MY Defender 90. Still pretty standard at present, but I've got a few ideas...

And here it is doing what it's designed to do...

Andy, looks similar to my old one. Best colour choice in its time (I'm biased obviously).

Welcome to defender ownership

Thanks Rosco! I agree about the colour - I was restricted by what was available on the 2nd hand market (nowhere near the choice you get in the UK) but I was pleased this one came up.

Thanks! The photos were taken and edited on my iPhone - amazing what results you can get with a phone these days!

Re mods, like most owners I have a list Wink . Not sure I'll ever get to the end of it as I keep thinking / seeing new ideas - should really stop looking at forums I guess! Rolling Eyes

So far I've only done some basic comfort and practicality changes - XL wing mirrors, MUD seat rails, rear door gas strut, some storage nets, etc. Oh and I found a 2nd hand diff guard for a reasonable price so I've added that too. I'm not really planning "serious" off-roading, I mainly bought it to get me a little way into the back country for hunting, so I won't be going for any hard-core suspension / drivetrain mods. Besides, it's also my daily drive to work car, so I need to be a bit restrained! A bit more protection (steering guard, rear bumperettes), and some practicality stuff (anderson socket for compressor, worklights) are my first priorities.

And the advantage of grey is that it looks good in black and white photos!

Lovely 90 you have, from what we have seen in NZ Defenders are a rare breed!! Nothing better than a flat white on the deck of the Cornwall Park Restaurant or a nice cold one down at one of the bars on the Waterfront Thumbs Up

First three months
Well I've had the 90 for 3 months now so I guess an update is in order.

First and foremost I've driven it, mostly on-road but also a handful of off-road trips. The first was a 3 hour one-to-one instruction session, helping me get to grips with the fundamentals of off-roading, and a better understanding of what this vehicle is capable of. Suffice to say it's got way more capability than I have!

I've made a host of small mods too, mostly to improve convenience comfort and safety. These are pretty small-fry compared to the hard-core engineering that some people undertake, but I'm a complete novice at auto-DIY so I'm happy to take it steadily! Smile

Here are some of them:

TL: MUD seat rails - highly recommended, much better to sit on a seat rather than in a bucket!
TR: Rear door gas strut, also from MUD Stuff. Again, highly recommended - can't imagine the car without it now.
BL: LED interior light bulbs, brighter, whiter and more reliable (I'm LED-ing my way round the whole car - RDX indicators, tail lights and park lights are on order).
BR: Interior storage is also being improved bit by bit.

While I was ordering stuff from the UK, I also slipped in some upgraded wipers (Silblades) and the XL-sized door mirrors. Whistle

Next I treated my car to an axle and gearbox breather kit from Nugget Stuff. I was reasonably happy with the placement of the breathers for the gearbox and front diff (high on the bulkhead) but the rear diff was just tucked up under the bodywork as shown. Probably overkill, but river crossing is quite likely in the areas I want to take the car so I thought I'd better be safe than sorry. I still need to fix the diesel tank breather one of these days...

Another brand new venture for me into the world of auto-electrics. Thanks to all the heaps of advice I found on this forum I managed to fit a rear aux socket and work light / additional reverse light without stuffing anything up!

I still have a long list of things I want to do as time and funds permit (doesn't everybody?). Proper steering and diff guards are one area I want to look at but no-one in NZ manufactures this kind of stuff and the postage for getting it here is pretty steep to say the least.

Next on the agenda will be the replacement lights, and I also have a plan in mind for converting the car from my everyday road car into my weekend hunting/camping vehicle. This will combine increased load capacity, a safe area for the dog and a secure storage area for items I don't want in plain view. It also needs to be removable when the trip is over and ideally shouldn't take all day to fit! I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks! You're right - it's lovely over here. We came to visit for 2-3 years... and that was 17 years ago!! Laughing

I saw from another thread that you had similar plans that haven't worked out. Hopefully you'll get here one day. Be sure to look me up when you do!

A very nice truck...Smile I visited Auckland on business a few years ago and spent a very nice day driving up to the Bay of Islands and beyond. Great fun.

It may just be how the photo was taken, but it looks like your wheel nuts are those used on ally wheels. Is that right...? If so, I think you need to swap them for the steel wheel versions. At least that is what I was told on mine when I was swapping wheels from alloy to steel.

Cheers

Simon

Nuts!
couplands / Simon, you might be right about the nuts. The wheels were swapped over by the LR main dealer before I bought the car, so I assumed they'd used the correct nuts Rolling Eyes Looking at images on the net though, I suspect they've just kept the alloy ones.

I'll have to see if I can track down some replacements. I like the look of the black ones on here http://www.wrington.co.uk/land%20rover%20s...0nuts.html but whereas P&P in the UK for a full set is GBP 10, getting them to NZ costs GBP 45!! Shocked
