Temporary Loss of Turbo - Any ideas.
2007 110 Tdci 2.4 - 58k. Alive re-map, disabled EGR and performance exhaust without DPF.

Today, travelling at about 70mph, the power suddenly dropped off to the point where it would only sustain about 50. There were no ominous noises and no warning lights. It was like driving an old normally aspirated diesel.

I carried on for 3 or 4 miles and pulled in to a layby. I could tell that the turbo wasn't spinning up as I couldn't here it on revving the engine. After switching the engine off and re-starting everything seems to be fine again. Any ideas please?

Mines done that twice, both times after fast (80+) runs up from the ferry late at night.

At both times the fault occurred with a couple of miles of each other, I put it down to fuel & I suspect the VCV valve, sticking open or closed.

Anybody any other ideas?

Once at Easter, ferry back into Portsmouth, basically flat out up to 86mph speed limiter, slowed down for road works just before Tewkesbury and as you say, 50mph max until we stopped.

Then again in the summer exactly the same symptoms, just 5 miles nearer home.

First time I checked there was no suction in the tank when I took the filler cap off - all OK
Changed the fuel filter, some sediment but OK
Put it down to dodgy French diesel!

Second time didn't bother doing anything other than normal servicing. Odd thing is, on the way down to the ferry, 55mph fully loaded doesn't miss a beat. From Caen down to La Rochelle fairly fast and a longer run, again no problems.

Only consistent things are fast speed and French fuel, but my gut feeling from watching others problems on here is the VCV.

No amber light lit, and have a scangauge connected all the time no codes stored.

Everything was normal, temperature, etc, it just wouldn't go!

Exactly the same with mine Keith. UK Esso fuel though.
Haven't had time to check mine for fault codes yet, but I suspect all will be clear.

The only unusual circumstance was very wet road conditions. But I'm clutching at straws now.

Dry and fairly warm both times with me and the fault is so intermittent.

On the way home from the ferry in early November, it ran faultlessly.

I'm about to blank the egr, it has Ians IRB 410 remap already with egr closed, but recently it has thrown a couple of egr fault codes.

Also I may need to look at new glowplugs as cold running isn't good, but I don't think that has anything to do with the other fault.

Sounds much like my issues, it did come with a fault code though (turbo overboost).

It was a new sensor on the inlet manifold that cured mine but check the hoses (turbo - intercooler and intercooler - inlet) for leaks.

HI there, same problem. But happening twice each day on the way to work. I'm getting very slick at restarting the engine without slowing down.

I was having a look to see if it might be the turbo vane actuator sticking, but it seems OK. Had a look at the MAP sensor you had replaced, and it is covered with horrible black goo. So I think a new MAP sensor is the next thing to try.

When I had the fault codes read, I got the same overboost fault, as well as "mass air flow higher than expected but within limits"

Do you know if the sensor replacement is straightforward plug in a new one, or was any diagnostic stuff required to let the engine know it had a new sensor?

After a discussion over TDCI's and rough running whilst waiting for service in the plumbers merchant last week, one of the other customers went out to his shiny VW van and appeared with a Puma EGR blank plate he happened to have!

What an amazing transformation - Ian at IRB has already put his EGr delete tune on, but it must have been stuck open, it runs fantastically, no cold running issues, all the flat spots are gone - just like when Ian did the tune originally.

Its amazing how much deterioration you get used to!

Still don't know about a long run though, have to wait for Easter for another test.

As above ....unplugging may not help. Only way to be sure egr is not passing is to blank it.
