Might have answered my own question
I assumed that by use of the expression 'going out of shape' Andy was referring to a flat spot on the tyre circumference by being parked up for a long time. However found this on pure tyres HERE

With old tyres that perish (cracks) the tyre while being driven heats up and if cooled with water/rain it can draw water in through these cracks and over a period of time cause steel cords to rust and break up causing the tyre to go out of shape, the older BFGoodrich are prone to this. Andy.
