I was fortunate enough to get one at a reduced price from a fellow forum member who lived locally to myself. From a looks perspective they are uncomplicated, uncluttered and stylish with the usual excellent build quality of the brand name. You also have the option of high or low fitting with a rotational mounting bar for the wheel. Brendan supplies these and I believe he may too have such a carrier fitted. Details here:

When I first bought this nearly two years ago I stripped the bearing mechanism down and cleaned and repacked the bearing housing with a good quality Mobil grease. There was very lttle evidence of grease in it when I got it with only light lubrication evident.
The swivel point is easily accessible on the vehicle and I have checked it since but have had no need to regrease. Also with the heavier 10" wide spare wheel I have fitted I have experienced no issues whatsoever with the bearing. My theory was that if the bearing mechanism is packed with as much grease as possible no moisture ingress would occur and that theory appears to have worked well. May I ask ... Are those crush tubes to fit in the crossmember ?
I have a Mantek carrier that I bought 2nd hand - and it was missing the crush tube they come with. If yours are the same fitting and jou could measure them for me ? I'd be very grateful and get a couple made up. |

We supply both the Safari Equip single pivot multi height wheel carrier and the stainless steel wheel carrier from Nakatanenga
Safari Equip is mild steel and powder coated and is £425. It can be provided galvanised then powder coated at extra cost. It requires some holes in the rear cross member enlarging to 12-13mm(?) for the anti crush can. Round bar construction. Wheel is moved to offside and can be at 2 heights. Rear door fitting bolts on and consists of a sliding mechanism. The Nakatanenga one is stainless steel and powder coated and is £595 It requires two 8mm holes in rear cross member enlarging to 10mm Square bar construction. Wheel is moved to offside and only one height for the wheel Rear door fitting consists of two ball socket joints which is much more forgiving of Land Rover build tolerances/wear and tear. We have both fitted to two of our Defenders. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Brendan |

Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I am trying to fit a Safari Equip single pivot arm with no instructions! Can anybody take a look at the photos and tell me anything I have done wrong here? The sliding door mechanism feels stressed when I open the door and when I tighten the bolts locating the sliding arm to the round tube the whole thing starts to jar. Any help appreciated. |

Looks like the slider plate is sitting too low on the door and the galvanised slider is being 'squashed'. I have a bit of the vertical 'leg' of the slider bracket visible below the slider boxing.
Do you have any adjustment left in the slotted holes on the slider plate to lift it slightly higher on the door? Or alternatively could you mount the slider bracket (galvanised part) under the swing arm bracket rather than on top of it? (Mine is also on top, as your picture). Frustrating that they don't supply instructions - I know it's mainly fairly obvious, but I had a few little adjustments to make to mine (got the slider plate upside down to start with!). Couple of other points - have you got the spacer plate in behind the crossmember mounting bracket? And mine was also very stiff to operate initially, but lightened up significantly once the weight of the wheel was on it and it had been opened / closed a few times. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |

Thanks for the reply.
Spacer plates have been fitted - one on inner face (with cut out) and one on outer - 2no.M10 bolts and 4no.M12 bolts with 4no crush cans! what a faff. Paint peeling off out of the box! There is adjustment on the door plate to fit higher but as it's a half door I want to keep the top of plate below the door capping. I will try to fit the galv slider on the underside to give more "leg" as you say. Also not tried with wheel on so additional weight may help. The half round connection plate on the tubular arm isn't 90degree to the arm due to a poor weld which means they two parts jar when bolted together. The photos of the door plate on the 4x4 overlander website show the slider housing a third down from the top - mine seems to be 2/3's down - I presume this is a design change made by Safari Equip? Seen, yes does look identical.
Does yours operate smoothly and open to 90degrees? |

It opens to 90 and is pretty smooth. I bought it second hand and it needed a bit of an overhaul. For what would be £500+ when new from TMD I’d have to say it’s not worth it.
