2.4 clatter under load at 1300-1800RPM
My Defender starts as easy as you like, pulls well and seems to getting fuel economy as expected.
When it starts, if it's cold the idle isn't that steady, there's some grey smoke for about 30s and until it warms up it's quite smelly.

When accelerating, between about 1300 and 1800RPM there's a pretty horrendous clattering noise that I first through was some resonance with the now removed top box so I wasn't too worried, but now I've eliminated that I'm not so happy. It pulls well through it, but it happens in every gear under any sort of load. You can get through the band without, but it's difficult.

I don't know if it's related, but I noticed last night that there's a "dead" spot around 2300RPM, as you're accelerating you suddenly feel the power drop off for a split second. As I say, it accelerates very well and I have no problem keeping up or overtaking up to the speed limiter (obviously only on private roads).

Any ideas?

It's a 2011 2.4 Puma with 14k miles and has two dealer service stamps (the last one about 3k miles ago) and one non-dealer stamp form the people I bought it from. I guess they didn't actually service it and just stamped the book seeing as that what such people usually seem to do, though I might be wrong (it was a Ford main dealer). I have a generic fault code reader that I haven't plugged in yet and I've sent the Nanocom people an email with some questions as I'm looking to buy one.

Edit: I had been thinking about maybe trying one of the many diesel injector cleaner fuel additives.

Thanks for the help, I'll do some research about that tomorrow and see what sort of job it's like to do.

It's under a warranty but goodness knows whether it's something I can claim on.

Out of curiosity did the clatter start after the last dealer service? The reason I am asking is they may have updated the PCM software and not carried out a pilot correction or fuel pump learn to the new software. Also depending on where you get your fuel from can affect the clatter especially if it is supermarket fuel. When you say the top box has been removed would that be the cat? If so the exhaust fumes will be more acrid due the cat removal. It wouldn't hurt to run a bottle of Forte or millers through the tank to aid with cleaning and raising the cetane level. Thumbs Up

I only bought it last month so I can't comment on before/after service, and when I say top box I mean a honking great lump of steel bolted to the roof. See here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic33560.html
When I took it for a test drive it was rattling but it just sounded like it was the top box resonating. Turns out I was wrong Embarassed

OOI, can the "pilot correction" and "fuel pump learn" be DIY jobs? They sound like simple electronic things.

I'll have a look on the dealer invoices to see what they did.

You can with a Faultmate. Or should I say, a with a Faultmate you may be able to. Gary at Alive lent me his and talked me through the process, but did not work for me. So had to do a seven hour drive to see Gary and back to get it sorted. Rolling Eyes

I had it looked at today, and it was embarrassingly simple.

The bolts holding the flange on to the back of the hand brake were loose Rolling Eyes

Anyway, I now have a very non-rattly 110 Smile
