2.2 Clattering on cold start - any ideas?
Hello all,

My 63 plate USW makes an awful, noisy clatter on cold start first thing in the morning.

It sounds like the big ends have gone for a couple of seconds, then it's fine.

On a warmish re-start it's fine too from key on.

The oil pressure light goes out straight away every time.

Is this one of those quirks that happens to all of them (as the dealer says) or has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

Thanks.

I had big end noise, that was eventually worked out to be a new vcv, my noise was when hot, but then fitted new vcv and got noise (less) when cold until it was re calibrated into the fuel system

So my guess is either new vcv required and re calibrating, or just re calibrating your existing one.

BUT mine was on a 2.4 Tdci, so may be completely wrong.

Variable control valve. It's a small electronic thing that bolts to top of the fuel pump. Easy to change but very very fiddly. But then computer kit needed for programming.

Update - well the dealer's not interested.

'Its a normal sound for a Defender. Sir.'

Bloody well isnt.

Does it get worse if a variable control valve problem?

And if it is VCV, what's actually happening? 2003 Td5 110 Hardtop

I can only say by my experience, but I think it's overfueling causing diesel knock which is not good, as it can't control the amount of fuel correctly. I don't know if it will get worse as that will depend on if your VCV (if it is that) just needs re calibrating into the system, or if it is failing. If failing I think it will get worse, to a point that the knocking is considerable, and more constant.

A recalibration for someone who knows what they are doing, and has the kit is a very very very simple job, less than an half an hour, and would certainly assist with assessing the noise, and be my first stage.
