Weight on roof
Hi,

I'm heading up to Broome shortly and I need a second spare tyre, which will go on the roof (god help me if I need to take it off). In addition to the tyre I intend to put a cargo box (recovery gear), 20L plastic jerry can (water) and some light bags (clothes) on roof as well. Taking into account that I already have a 2mtr long alloy luggage tray, I'm wondering whether this will be too much for the roof? I know the centre of gravity changes significantly, but I just don't want to break something due to weight - my instinct is that I should be fine with weight to spare, but some advice would be appreciated.

Also, how the hell does anyone ever get a spare tyre on/off the roof of a Defender without totally shattering their back? I don't want to look like 'Mr Bean Goes Outback'! Is there a special technique that I'm not aware of?

Max load recomended by Land Rover (for areas outside of Europe) is 150 kg including the roof rack (only 75 kg for Europe).

the roof will take the weught as you see people with a 50kg roof tent then add two adults at 100+ kg each, i would say don't do it for on the move though just back from a trip with a group of people one guy in a disco 1 or 2 (slightly lower than a defender) had a not very over lowded roof rack on and made some side slopes look very risky when we just walk'd it with no problems, but thats just me.

Hi Rick,
Regarding getting wheels off the roofrack...
Recently I had to carry 6 wheels home up on the roof rack and found the best way was to stand on the rack, pass a long strap though the wheel and lower it down under control over the back. I loaded them the same way which saved a lot of gruning Embarassed

I just got back from a trip from Romania, where I had to carry three large, heavy suitcases, boxes and 4 wheels w/ snow tyres (16'' wheels) for my wife's car.

I'm sure I was over the advised limit, and I could feel that it slightly affected the handling of the truck. I just took corners slowly and everything was OK. It wasn't grossly overloaded...

When it came to take the wheels off - I just went on top, undid the ratchet strap and threw them on the grass. Very Happy I didn't know that wheels/tyres would bounce like they did! Embarassed One took off down the street, had to run after it.

Just got back from Morocco Whistle did I mention that before Whistle

Anyway on the Hannibal rack I had a Howling Moon roof tent, 4 waffle boards, Spare wheel, 2 Jerry cans, Awning and an AluBox full of er er crap. Got to some extreme angles in the dunes and all was fine. On the way home I removed everything that was not bolted to the rack (spare, waffles and jerry cans) and placed them inside the vehicle. The reason for this was the hotels on the way back had no secure parking. Removing these item made no noticeable difference to the vehicle performance or handling.

Just a note that isnt correct

UK/Europe spec is
The maximum roof load is 150 kg (330 lb).
When calculating the roof load, the weight
of the roof rack and any load carrier must
be included.

As for total weight - well do know someone who got the sides to collapse with the roof load! Mike

Wyvern - thanks for the tip, that makes sense (I'm relieved), will make sure I have a long enough strap.

A tyre weighs a lt less then a tyre/rim or wheel. So just take a spare tyre carcass or two? OK you will need tyre levers etc but a lot less weigh. OK a bit more work

Also a suitable size inner tube or wo. Yes inside of a tubeless tyre is rougher then a tubed tyre.

Main problem comes if you seriously buckle two rims!

Main problem I had with punctures in Oz was roofing screws in towns!

Water bladders are a better solution then jerry cans. Take up far less space when empty

Make sure you have a decent compressor onboard

I think you might be quite surprised how much 150kg is. Also, i would think the 150kg limit is for "continuous" weight.
I recently did a trip though Lesotho with big tent, aluminium trunk full of heavy stuff, plastic trunk full of wood, 2 jerry cans (20lt water and 20lt diesel) as well as the weight of the roof rack (probably 25kg), and that's about a total of 130/140kg i reckon...
And then me (umm, a bit more than 100kg) often climbing up and getting stuff...

How the hell do you guys insert images??
