Hi Alex

I did this myself as a project with an off the shelf strut. I did the calculations based on the recommendations of the manufacturer and ordered what I thought would be the ideal strut for a door with a spare wheel mounted. It is just about ideal, but as others have said it is necessary to slow it a little at the end of the stroke or it can give a big jerk to the mountings.

Spec of the strut I ordered was

L 407.5, stroke 160mm, Force 400N with 8.1mm clevis/clevis ends

Part No. 016 25029/400

My Mk1 fitting. There is a slightly larger spreader plat on the other side of the wheel arch.

I find that on all my trailers the spare tyre on the door catches the jockey wheel so there is little risk of paint damage unless I am parked at a strange angle

There is more to gas struts then force and lengths.

The ones used in the Mk 2 version are a special order gas strut. Currently we can not get any more rear door gas struts until mid February time when the next batch of gas struts comes off the production line. Hopefully we will have enough Mk2 versions to last us through until we can get more.

As I said that was not the case with mine so it's wise to be cautious when opening the door for the first time if you have a trailer in tow, with a bit of luck you'll be ok Thumbs Up Steve.
