Weird
At first I thought maybe it was nicked by someone just for nicking it's sake - but then you'd have to know Defenders to know that it did just come off. Ar5e hole5 |

Exactly what I thought, only someone who knew how one fitted, and that it did indeed cover a hole in the rear quarter where the filler cap is, and would actually also have a use for one.
Now when we parked , there was a Disco 2 parked in front, with no one on board, when we returned there was someone sat in the drivers seat and , they stayed put until we had loaded up, turned around, and driven off. When I noticed it was missing, the first the wife said was, " I bet the guy in the disco whipped it off" either for himself or a mate. Not a nice line of thought, but I guess there is more chance of it being correct, than a random pedestrian removing it . Who knows, but as mentioned, I could have returned to find my indicators, my new Noldens, my doors etc, all missing with no requirement for anything more than basic tools, and X minutes of someone's time Such is life I guess, it just boils my that it's occured. |

It was definately on when I left the house as I looked at the cctv footage when I returned and it was fitted then.
Before I had it painted I had tweaked it to make it a tighter , snugger fit, so I know it didn't just fall off. Granted , it wasn't expensive , but I would be less annoyed, if I had left on top of a fuel pump somewhere, or run it over at the garage. As I say, no big deal in the overall scheme of things, it's just the see it, want it , take it part of society that irritates me. A customer of mine had been cutting his grass, he went to empty the grass collector, came back to find someone had taken his petrol mower in the space of a couple of minutes, from his front garden, through his gate, then either pushed it down the road, or shoved it into a vehicle. Most likely to end up at a car boot sale somewhere, or the other excellent means of moving on stolen goods....E bay. |

Why on earth don't they produce some sort of secure lanyard for them anyway?
A good design somewhat flawed sadly by security. |

Replacement has been ordered ( along with one of their snow cowls, just to help protect the Defendoor in transit you see ))
As Steve mentions , a tether of some sort would make sense, something I already had on my mind as I have been chewing it over. I am going to attach a stainless steel plate to the inside with a drilled 90 deg tag in the middle to attach a thin ( cycle brake cable ) stainless cable to, which will then be looped around the filler neck underneath the cap, below the threads. I was thinking of hot gluing the plate to the back, but I don't think , due to the nature of the plastic, that this will not come adrift if ripped off with force, so I think 2 x rivets will do the job, then when painted they won't be too obvious when amongst the mass of factory rivets on the panels. |

I riveted a piece of rubber sheet to the back of my defendoor then secured it around the rubber grommet that locates the fuel filler pipe, Thor has it on his truck now, so,I don't have a photo

Sadly, it's often other Defender 'enthusiasts' that actively thieve parts - either for themselves or to sell on the huge 'second-hand' market place. Yet another example of Yorkshire continuing to maintain its reputation for Defender thieving.
I'd wager that the thief would know exactly what they were thieving - after all how many folk would recognise the 'blanking plate' for what it is - or target a vehicle for that one component.. I know the very area you parked up in - I'm never that relaxed leaving my own Defender in York. Not very far along the road - a well known company was having problems with staff taking microwave ovens off its property. The solution was - two small squares of stainless steel, one attached to the oven, the other to the shelf by 'aircraft' quality double-sided tape - a short length of stainless steel cable (not unlike a bicycle brake cable) was fastened to the two steel plates. It proved rather effective as a deterrent. |
