Had the bonnet up on her today and there is a Land Rover Label about genuine Land Rover Anti Freeze and Do Not Drain.

I have the same referring to swivel grease, I know it is genuine because thats what I put in, but I would doubt it if it wasn't mine and just walked up to it.

Unless you know yourself suspect it not to be and then only use genuine. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

So what's the deal of mixing different coolants, or rather: how can I tell what type of coolant is in mine? Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000

red with red only ( most common now days easy to get )
green or blue can be mixed (not so common nowdays , better to flush out and change to red )

that's the basic rule

but they are some odd antifreezes , really best advice is to change / flush / anti freeze if you don't know whats in it then keep it the same

Why topping anything up, unless you have been loosing coolant?
The Puma has antifreeze in the cooling system from new, and according to LR maintenance schedule needs to be flushed and replaced by new only after 200.000 km.
I don't think over the years antifreeze looses its main function, i.e. to protect against frost, no?
Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Is your coolant red or blue ? If it is blue it is glycol based and must be topped up with a similar glycol based anti freeze and changed every two years, If it is red it is OAT anti freeze and must be topped up with red anti freeze this usually has a life of five years before it needs changing. 2005 Td5 90 XS

it should be done on millage or years old which ever comes first really not just amount of miles its done

you change it to get rid of any cr@p in it , rust dust etc

most cars will use a very small amount of coolant and if someone just tops up with water your losing the strength of anti freeze

advice , buy a tester

general rule change every 5 yrs on average mileage car

and if you really want to get excited about it , don't use tap water , use CLEAN rain water

some say just use tap water , some say distilled water , some say rain water . there are fors and against and not sure anyone knows 100% which is best

but water with less additives and impurities should be better
