How long does it last and how can you tell if it's past it's best when taste is subjective ie I guess someone might deem a good wine as gone off cos it's not to their taste?

Open it, pour it, drink it, if it tastes ok then finish the bottle......I don't have a 'wine palette' so just drink what I like not what everyone says I should like Thumbs Up

Will last for a lifetime if properly stored.

If it has a proper cork- that is a good way to tell if its ok, if the cork is dry and crumbly suspect it to be off.

Wine itself won't go off to the point it will make you sick, it will just taste fowl like vinegar, you wont be able to drink enough to make yourself ill.

Depends how picky you are.

Once open, for me, it's a week max (if it lasts that long).

If your are storing it and it has a cork, don't store it upright, the cork will dry out and let in air, which ruins the wine. So keep it horizontal to keep the cork wet, if you are storing it. ---------------------------------------------

A very good rule... Thumbs Up

Most wines should be quaffed on the day of opening, especially red, as they will start to deteriorate the minute the are exposed to the atmosphere, although some, so-called experts suggest the initial hour or two letting it 'breathe' will improve the better reds... Whistle

You may get away with keeping an opened white a maximum of a couple of days, as long as it is stoppered and refrigerated... Very Happy

The only exception to the above will be champagne, which may be opened and kept thus, i.e. Not stoppered (or any other silly method!) and kept in a fridge for up to three days without losing its fizz - the better the bubbles the longer the fizz will be retained... Mr. Green

However, if you are talking about storage, that is a whole different ball game and depends on conditions; light, temperature, attitude and initial quality of the vintage, most will last a good few months stored near to horizontal in a shaded/dark and cool(ish) place! They do not take well to fluctuations in temperature and other conditions either... Neutral

There will always be exceptions and a reasonable quality vino from your local supermarket could last a year or more just racked in the kitchen, but why would you bother?... Rolling Eyes

I wouldn't know, as my local supermarket is my personal wine cellar - I just grab a few bottles out of that cellar whenever required, for immediate to near future quaffing... Rolling with laughter
 Rog... Mr. Green
The GREEN One...
