Big vibrations
Happy Christmas and all!!

Just wanted to ask, I am having some issues with big vibrations down my steering wheel and wanted to know if anyone had had any similar issues. When driving the steering wheel shakes viciously and quite scarily on the road until up to speed.

I have checked the steering damper and the bearings, also the tracking is fine and the wheels were balanced recently, however admittedly I am running 30mm spacers on the front and back!

Can someone please help.

to be honest, from my experience this can be down to many things (as long as you have investigated the obvious...balancing, wheel bearings etc...). If it is the start of death wobble then you are better off biting the bullet and doing everything. Bushes, swivel bearings and pan hard rod especially. The list is such:

Wheel balancing
Wheel bearings
Steering dampener
Panard rod bushes
Radius arm bushes and swivel bearings

If you don't fancy doing them all at once then tackle them in this order.

Also, my local independent told me that 110s suffer more from death wobble than 90s, so they often adjust the swivel bearings tighter on 110's.

So, does it ever happen when you hit bumps in the road? If it does then your problems are probably further down the list of things to do.

Also, another test is to throw a load of weight in the back, which will reduce weight at the front and probably make your symptoms worse.

Sorry if I have thrown up more problems than solutions but the front end of a defender is a busy place. 2002 110 td5

I guess the panard bushes aren't that bad to replace, but the swivel bushes will be yes!!?

Does anyone know which Swivel kit it would be for a 2002 110 defender? There seem to be so many various kits.

I have had vibration issues before with wheel spacers not having the correct spigot to locate the wheel correctly, might be worth removing the front spacers and trying it. 90 300 TDI SW (sold)

I have had similar symptoms on a Range Rover classic after hitting bumps in the road this was down to the front swivels needing some shims removing to increase the preload.

I'd deffo remove the spacers first and try that. 2005 Td5 90 XS

Like these guys have said...check the simplest first

Remove the wheel spacers, if that doesnt cure it, swap the wheels front to back in case you have a bent alloy wheel and whilst you have the wheels off check the tyres have no eggs or slipped belts.

Good luck Thumbs Up 2003 Td5 90

Have you been off-roading and is there still some mud in the rims? Twisted Evil Happens to me regularly but I know what it is then. Very Happy Roel

I have just eliminated the dreaded steering wobble that happens from around 40mph to 50mph'ish. It has been a long process with mine with each step seeming to cure the problem with it returning within a matter of time with some periods being longer than others.
When I started I thought I had nailed it first time and in hindsight I had but the items I used turned out to be the biggest waste of money. Last year I bought, what I thought was a good deal, a complete set of what were described as OEM metalastic bushes, all have which have been replaced now teaching me the age old lesson of buy cheap buy twice.
With all the red herrings the crappy bushes through up, I had a little difficulty getting to the bottom of the cause but the positive part was that I have completely overhauled my steering. The list includes;
new wheel bearings and swivel bearings on near side(all needed doing anyway),
lower steering column assembly(upper UJ had started to get excessive play),
drop arm ball joint(was an advisory at last years MoT),
track rod ends have been replaced,
all shock absorbers were replaced with OEM new take offs 18 months ago along with the steering damper,
I've had new tyres in the last 6 months.
There wasn't much left to do but after renewing the Panhard Arm bushes for the second time for some proper ones we've cured it again............untill the next little problem Whistle
The biggest pain is that with each new part it 'cures' the problem for a little while, with mine all the bits I changed were worn and all had a contributory factor and needed renewing so I'm now looking forward to some driving time of wobble free steering Thumbs Up

Did you check the steering damper thoroughly?
A tiny amount of free play in the straight on position is easy to miss.
Try replacing the damper. They're not expensive.

Thanks for all the tips guys. There has always been some play with the steering as in wobble but as some of you say this can be exaggerated with spacers. The steering damper has been replaced in the past 4 months with a Terrafirma and that was a big difference in the bumps in the road.

There is quite a bit of oil on the outside of the swivel, so sadly i suppose i will have to start with the those, the expensive bits and move on from there.

The sad thing is, we all know that the notorious Defender will always throw a heap of faults in at some point of its life and its always hard to find the exact issue with whats going on, so we end up replacing half the parts with new until the problem is resolved!! But then at least we know its got another 100 thousand miles in it.

I also have a leaking front screen and suppose i shall get that replaced soon as well, it always comes in threes, so something else has to give, Oh wait no that's already happened with iffy locks!!
