So, had the time today to have a good look at the engine. I wanted to make sure it would crank over OK.

1.) Removed each spark plug. Only 1 and 3 has any corrosion at all. A little white dust/ali type corrosion. A quick wire brush removed in seconds.
2.) Inspected each bore with a borescope and they are as clean as a whistle. Obvious this has never been started as you could eat your dinner off the insides. Lovely cross hatching etc.
3.) Bores 1,3 and 8 had minor amounts of what can best be described as condensation inside but no corrosion. Rest were clean and dry.
4.) Proceeded to use the air compressor blow gun to gently air out the cylinders. Dropped some penetrent wd40 type stuff and little engine oil into each bore. Had a brew.
5.) Tried to crank engine with shortish break bar. no plugs etc.

...and it wont turn clockwise, only counter clockwise? bit perplexed by that. This is obviously standing in front of the pulley and viscous fan.

It turns CCW OK but is pretty stiff but did a few revolutions of the crank pulley. Lots of squeking from the ancilleries.

I might pull the serpentine belt off it and try again. Could be a jammed ancillery? (a/c, alternator, power steering pump)

Im thinking there cant be much at all wrong with it as its literally as new. Some photos Smile

Oh by the way..... if it wasnt already quite obvious im no mechanic (actually an IT guy!); rather an enthusiatic ametuer. Feel like im already well over my head lol! Gonna be interesting.

Next updates will contain a first stab at a parts list...

Looking forward to this too! I have a 110 rolling chassis and an ex RR 4.6 gathering dust which I'm planning for my winter project, time allowing. I just can't decide whether to go manual or auto, whichever is easiest really i think! Only major 'need' is to be able to do motorway speeds at sensible revs

So the plan is to build up a rolling chassis in the first half of next year. The specs gonna be pretty high as im already used to the koni setup I have now and want to go a step further. Im not planning at this point on removing anything from my current vehicle as once the rolling chassis is complete im going to get my local landie garage to lift and shift my current body onto this new rolling chassis! at least thats the plan!

Im planning on building up the chassis myself with the help of a mate. The only bits that phase me are the actual lift and fit of the engine/transmission as id need to hire an engine lift, and the brake pipes which ive never done before.

Ive started to write up a list of stuff id like, and obviously there will be shedloads of bits and peices not including these big bits. Have a looksie at the spec and let me know if its barking lol! Ive not added it up yet but its not going to be cheap.... will have to see how much I want to raid the piggy bank.

Am i missing anything major?

Thats a whole lot of Ashcroft!

Have you spoken to them? I have never dealt with them personally but I understand they are pretty helpful, perhaps give them a call with what your trying to achieve and the engine and how your going to use the finished defender and they will tell you what you need and don't need? Disco 3 gone but the memory of the bills remain...
XS 110 Utility maybe one day..... (did they fix the quality yet?)

yeah it is a lot of ashcroft stuff tbh, but my whole rear axle is all ashcroft already (atb, halfshafts and drive members) and i want to replicate it up front. The only thing I dont know is whether their HD shafts will work with standard CV's as these are big money.

Im not stuck on getting a recon ZF and LT230 yet, but id like the biggest torque converter i can get, and want the internal ATB in the transfer box - so that pretty much means modding a known good or buying from ashcroft - at least for the transfer box.

My current landie pretty much does off roading 90% of its life (pay and plays mainly) and some road duty, and I think the road stuff may increase a little when ive rebuilt it.
