United Kingdom 2008 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 CSW Bonatti Grey
2.4 Puma Performance
Hi

I have recently brought a 58 plate 90 xs, 85000 miles.

How (if possible can i tell if its been re-mapped?) as it seems to go VERY well!!

I am interested to know how others perform, to make a comparison.

My exhaust has no middle silencer just the back box, sits on BBS Discovery 18" wheels,

I have also noticed that when i came to service it there is a K+N air filter in the air box.

It seems to go like a rocket, pulling in 5th and 6th is effortless and just seems to keep on going!

The EGR is still on and working, not sure if its been blanked although its on my "to do list"

Also the turbo whistles quite loudly from the intake, and when the dump valve opens.

I have a Snap On Modus ultra, is there a way of checking on this if something has been "played with?"

The Land Rover runs fine, just seems a bit of an animal for a Defender

Many thanks

When you mention the EGR...
Is it doing cleaning cycles on shutdown?

Interesting point about the dump valve sounds. As far as I know the Defender is a bit more sophisticated than to have one of those. I thought it had an electronically controlled variable geometry turbo, which reduces boost by adjusting its vane angle, or gas flow onto said vanes. If it's making dump valve sounds maybe it has been mapped and just has a ton of boost causing the sound effects. The turbo isn't really noticeable on my standard 2.4.

Thats whats been making me wonder!
As you said no dump valve on tdci.....but mine sounds just like one, the turbo really does whistle, when going through the gears and shutting off just sounds like a dump valve opening? all pipes are sound and in good condition, the engine is i good condition, and has been well looked after so i have no doubt its a mechanical fault with the turbo.

Love the way it goes, previous owner was a lady, she said it seemed to go well too! 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Hello,you have a Snap-On Modus.

Look in data-stream and tell me what the EGR Valve is doing during the driving range and what the fuel demand is when you do a full load accel.
TDCi does not have a dump valve, what you are hearing is the turbo spooling down off it's curve.

Will do, it will have to be a weekend thing as i have not got the time to play in the evenings!!

What sort of readings should i be expecting with a standard tdci?

Im a bit new to the Modus but will try and put the readings up on here when done

Cheers

Your turbo sound has got nothing to do with the remap.

That sound (as per video) is due to removal of the catalytic converter and the center cilencer box.

Had this mod done on my previous 90 with the result being the exact sound as per this video.

Makes me wonder if I should not do it again on the 110.......

Thumbs Up

Ps...on your EGR readings:

Remember that all these devices can only tell you what the ECU instructs the EGR to do. It can't actually tell you what the EGR is doing.

Thus, if you have a blanked EGR which is still active, you will get normal EGR readings on your scanner.

EGR readings are also dependant on Barometric Pressure, i.e. altitude above sea level. For instance, at the coast the EGR readings will be easily 40-70% open at most times (except during very hard acceleration) but at altitude (we live on the High Veld here in Pretoria/Johannesburg which is +_ 1700-1800m above sea level) we hardly ever see an open EGR at all with normal readings for us between 0-12% open on rare occasions but mosty 0%.

So basicaly, if your readings are active, your EGR is not "shut off" by remap but you might still have a blanking plate. If your readings are 0% all the time then your EGR is disabled by remap.

I love the sound of that defender but not sure about the "turbo spooling down". If i remove the cat and center silencer box will the turbo make this noise? "Good advice is always certain to be ignored, but that's no reason not to give it." Agatha Christie
