I would do as said above. Rear quarters and overhanging the rear. The rear door is quite inset so even with a spare shouldn't really foul a side mounted waffleboard. Also, they get really heavy and muddy sometimes, so the less you have to lift them the better. Also, from recent experience, I would try to avoid keeping them inside the car if possible. Sheep poo mud smell in your car really does give it a rather agricultural feel...
