Series 2 / 3 gearbox question
A friend of mine has a series 3 lightweight with a blown gearbox. I have a spare good condition series 2 box that would be ideal if it will fit. As far as I can see, it is just a case of swapping the series 3 bell housing and clutch release system onto the S2 gearbox. We know he will not has synchromesh on 1 and 2, but that's not a problem. Are there any other things that may prevent this swap working out? 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Gareth,

It may be a straight swap but earlier Series 2/2a gearbox have a smaller layshaft (maybe suffix a....I'm not that great on later series)

I have, in the dim & distant past, swapped bellhousings over. I don't recall any issues with the shaft sizes but I was probably just lucky.

Apparently the S2 non synchro boxes are supposed to be stronger than the S3 anyway.

Goes straight in with the bell housing swapped from memory. People reckon their the strongest but in reality I've found the last on the SIII boxes better (still gush oil out from absolutely everywhere same as the rest though Laughing )

Thanks for the replies. We have already stripped the S3 box and it does have a different layshaft. On the S2 box it is a large castellated nut and split pin. On the S3 it has a smaller bolt that screws into the end of the layshaft. The shaft itself seems the same size. Hopefully that will be it. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV

Well, just got back from Shropshire where the proposed swap was going to happen, and my 2a box does have a smaller layshaft. It is smaller in diameter at the bell housing end, and the bearing from the S2 bell housing is smaller than the hole for it in the series 3 bell housing Sad

So anyone contemplating this, check and compare the layshaft bearing size before taking it all to bits.

So in this case no swap possible. Now proceeding to rebuild the S3 box. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV
