Chile 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 SW Orkney Grey
Tell me about your dream roof rack?
I'm in Chile where there isn't an oceanic availability of Defender accessories. Would like to build a roof rack for my 110. Should be straightforward, but:

1) What would you say are the best features and elements to have on this rack?

2) Ideally, for example, I'd like to be able to put the spare tire up there, and

3) Have a ladder that can be put away

4) Would have to employ readily-available materials, not proprietary polycarbonates and specially-extruded members, etc.

5) Space for illumination on front and one side

6) I'm particularly curious to see how the rack is secured to the vehicle. I see that there is a rain trough that it can be secured to, but am curious to see details on the hardware that clamps the roof rack to the vehicle...

7) Must be easily removable, so that the vehicle remains practical for city driving. By "easily" I simply mean that the rack can be hoisted by block pulleys once the clamps have been disengaged from the rain trough...

Let's have some fun.

Let's design this together, and I'll be sure to provide play-by-play pictures of the fabrication.

I already have my 'dream' roof rack as it does everything I want it to. A basic rack, no ladder, luggage rails, and carries stuff when I need it to. A Patriot.....

Patriot and Hannibal are the best racks available IMHO, and with the component extras they offer give the customer what they want/need. If you start with the basic concept of reproducing their flat rack you can always evolve and add to it accordingly.

Your needs may be different to everyone elses so ideally it should be your design. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

+3 for Patriot. had 1 on my D3, didn't contemplate going elsewhere for the new one on my 110.
Perfectly built, after sales service is awesome.

Think the securing brackets are all pretty much based on the same principle. Here's a picture of mine after revamping them and adding the white polycarbonate wheel-washer to prevent the bracket from splaying outwards when tightening. I added a second nylock stainless steel nut and covered both nuts with a plastic domed cap from a Ford Transit wheel nut sealed with Sikaflex to finish it all off.

Interesting, based upon what I see with your mounting brackets, none of the weight of the rack rests on the rain trough. Is weight distributed across the whole roof, with anti-abrasive padding of some sort? Maybe I'm seeing incorrectly...

Each side of the rack sits on a blade in the gutter and is distibuted along each side of the vehicle. Hope that makes sense. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

+1 for Hannibal. I had one on 300tdi and it was great. Both Hannibal and Patriot have their floor slats running from front to rear. This significantly lessens wind noise so the racks are quieter than those that are cross ways (unless they have air dams).

I also liked the Hannibal awning which was so easy to use. 2.2 Tdci 110 XS CSW Corris Grey

I have a Patriot, which is a solid piece of kit, but think there could be at least 2 improvements:

1. A mechanism for locking the guttering clamps - I can only think of a top hat shaped padlock & hasp arrangement; and

2. the longitudional runners to be recessed channel that would then take any sort of additional fixings like the hannibal racks
